Grey’s Anatomy: Looking Back

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Season 10 of Grey’s Anatomy is finally upon us and I can’t believe it.  Where did the time go?  It seems like just yesterday Meredith, Cristina, Izzie, George and Alex were getting lectured by Chief Webber and yelled at by Bailey.  But our intern babies have grown up, had their own interns, and taken over the hospital.  Since the beginning, there have been numerous beautiful, shocking, sad, and memorable moments.  Too many to count.  But there are some we, as fans, will just never forget. Here are a few that I came up with:

Pick me, Choose me

Let me just say that Meredith and Derek ARE Grey’s Anatomy.  The show starts with them meeting, and we love it, then we find out he’s married, Addison shows up, and we hate it, and love it, and hate it… you get the picture.  But in Season 2 when Meredith confronts Derek in the scrub room with this quote about his choice, hearts all over the world are rooting for MerDer.

007 Moment

You all know what I’m talking about.  That insane OMG moment when Meredith realizes John Doe is George O’Malley.  Then the following scene of Izzie and George in the elevator?  It goes without saying this was jaw dropping and O’Malley’s death was the end of an era for Grey’s.

Cutting the LVAD wire/Denny Duquette

The craziness that was Denny and Izzie’s relationship gave the show intense drama for all of season 2, but when Izzie makes the decision to cut the LVAD wire and brings all the interns with her, a huge bonding moment happens.  Even Cristina has Izzie’s back and we truly see them as family.  When Denny dies they all go through a loss of innocence as interns.

Izzie and Cancer

This is a really big turning point for Karev as he finally steps up and takes the good guy role we always knew he was meant for.  Our hearts break as we root for both Izzie’s health and their relationship, and Izzie leaving also signals a huge change for the show.

Adele and Alzheimer’s

Adele getting Alzheimer’s not only drastically changes Dr. Webber but it also puts a huge conflict in Meredith and Derek’s relationship with their clinical trial.  When Meredith switches the placebo to the drug for Adele, Derek’s trial is ruined and their relationship is put on hold as the trust issues start.

The Shooting

Who can forget the epic season 6 finale?  The whole hospital on lockdown, people getting shot left and right, Bailey lying about being a nurse to escape injury, and then comforting a new intern as he dies—it was intense.  Derek gets shot by the husband of a patient while Meredith watches from across the hospital and Cristina holds her back. Cristina then has to operate on Derek, which changes her and leads her into a dark place in the following season.

Owen’s PTSD

Owen and Cristina get together and we’re happy that she’s moved on after Burke.  But Owen’s PTSD proves to be an issue in their relationship when he chokes Cristina in the middle of a night due to a nightmare.  It begins the many ups and downs of their relationship.

April’s Virginity

We learn of April’s virginity very soon after she comes on the show and it is an important characteristic that she values.  But the night before the boards her and Jackson get drunk and one thing leads to another…  and then she goes on to fail the test.  April blames Jackson and throughout the show goes back and forth from wanting him to hating herself for wanting him, which complicates things when they see other people.

Bailey Getting Married

When Bailey finally overcomes her fears of getting married again, we know big things are happening.  After her first failed marriage due to her commitment to saving lives, we doubted if she’d ever tie the knot again.  But who could resist the beautiful smile of anesthesiologist Ben?  Not me.  And not Bailey either.  Their love affair was so heart warming until Bailey started to pull away and cold feet.  Her ability to finally push out the negative thoughts and say “I do” was simply beautiful and a turning point for her.

Plane Crash

What didn’t the plane crash change?  The answer is nothing.  It transformed the whole show to an extreme degree.  Mark professes his love as Lexie dies in front of him, Mark dies after they return, Derek’s hand is injured, and Arizona’s leg is later amputated which starts a huge plotline with her and Callie.  It leads to Cristina leaving Seattle and Meredith not being able to fly.  Then there is the lawsuit against the hospital and Owen, the money they win, and their ultimate purchase of the hospital that leads to changing the name to the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Like I said, it changes everything.
