On-campus is your way to go: Job Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

Finding a job is hard. Finding one that is flexible around your school schedule is even harder.

Well, that’s why I’m here to help you. For eight months, I have been trying to find a part-time job that was flexible enough that I could still be a full time student.

Application after application, hours waiting for a phone call asking for an interview… but it never happened. McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, and even Wal-Mart—no phone call. Nothing. Zilch. Here’s the thing I wish I knew the summer of my freshman year: apply for on-campus jobs. If you’re unfortunate enough to still be without a job, it’s because you’re applying for common jobs.

What are you talking about? Hear me out. You and hundreds of other college students are applying for the same job. So, try thinking outside the box when job hunting.

  • Campus dining is always a great place to look. Aramark, UNCW’s food services, is always looking for people. On campus dining has many opportunities at Hawk’s Nest, Wag, The Dub, and yes—even the coveted Chick-fil-A. Here’s the real kicker: Aramark hires students, and what is even better is that they work around your school schedule.  If the food industry isn’t your thing, no worries because there are more on-campus opportunities.
  • Become an RA. Resident Assistant (RA) is a job for students of sophomore standing or above. RAs are pretty much in charge of keeping students in an assigned residential hall in line. They are paid on a month-to-month basis and are given free room and board. Not to mention, being an RA is a great leadership role to put on your resume!
  • If you’re a people person, become a desk receptionist: Desk receptionists check students in, schedule appointments, and answer phone calls. UNCW has many offices, such CAIC, housing, and financial aid, that need students to perform generic receptionist work. It’s easy, and most of the time the office tailors around your school schedule, so it’s a win-win situation.

Have you visited our Career Center lately? They can find the perfect fit for you. All you have to do is make the effort and apply. So turn in your application and wait by the phone because it’ll be ringing!
