Her Campus: Tell us about yourself; why do you love photography?
Kyle: I’m a first year student at USC studying a Bachelor of Computer-Based Design, straight out of high school. Photography has got to be one of my favourite hobbies as we’re surrounded by unique and fascinating subjects to take photos of. Plus, you’re always learning something new about the camera you use or just photography in general.
HC: Have you always been interested in it?
Kyle: From about the age of 13 I discovered stop-motion animation on YouTube & decided to try it out for myself. I used the family camera to take photos for my very own animated web series which gained a lot of viewers. After four years of animating, I’ve moved away from making videos to just pure photography and I have recently upgraded to my first DSLR camera.
HC: Do you have any goals for photography after uni? What are they?
Kyle: I hope to get into either the film or gaming industry after University, so either way I’m sure photography will be involved. I will however continue taking photos as a hobby whenever I travel. I’d like to do some professional photography work one day, but I’ll need further learning for that.
HC: Are you looking for fame and fortune with photography? Why/why not?
Kyle: As much as I’d love to have fame and fortune, I prefer taking photos that anyone can see and will fascinate people. I’ve been sharing some of my photos on popular art and photography websites, but it is difficult getting your work out there. I think after more practice and sharing online, my work could bring me fame.
HC: Do you have a backup plan if you don’t make it?
Kyle:Â My backup plan would be to either continue learning about photography techniques to improve or just go straight into a film or gaming career.Â
HC: What are your plans for photography after uni? Travel?
Kyle: I would love to travel and see the world as that would be an excellent opportunity to continue with photography. I would probably still live in Australia though, unless an offer comes up for me that I can’t refuse, then I might be doing a lot of travelling.
HC: What’s your advice for other photography students?
Kyle: Practice makes perfect. Photograph anything you find interesting whenever you can and don’t be afraid to photograph subjects in unique ways. Photoshop can also be your best friend if your photos didn’t turn out the way you expected. You don’t always need the best, top of the range camera either. Most modern compact cameras are great for standard photography. Buying a cheap DSLR wouldn’t hurt though, especially if you like changing settings manually.
