Top 10 Fall Trends: First Day of School Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

Not sure what to wear on the first day? Incorporate these 10 fall trends straight off the runway and you’ll be sure to own the Milbank halls!

  1. Pointed Toe Shoes

It is time to change the way you think about pointed toe shoes. Boring and conservative no more, these shoes are making a definite comeback this fall. Pair them with a skirt or even jeans – whilst being mindful of tone and texture, of course-  and they’re sure to make any outfit look put together, mature and trendy!

Try: Topshop’s Gwenda Pointed Courts $95.00

  1. Leather

Adding a leather piece to your first day outfit can make you look edgy, sporty, or even womanly depending on how you wear it. Designers are treating leather as if it were a fabric nowadays, utilizing dyes, feminine cuts, and frame-flattering draping. Throw on some black booties and you’ll have a majorly stylish, on-trend first-day look.

Try: Piperlime’s Vegan Leather Shorts by Lucca Couture $44.97

  1. Over-The-Knee Boots

In continuation of this spring’s boot-sandal trend, rocking the over-the-knee boot is the perfect way to carry this trend into fall. Pair these boots with leggings and a cool graphic tee or sweater for an effortlessly put together first day outfit.

Try: Steve Madden’s ‘OTK’ Over the Knee Boot $139.95

4. Pleated Skirts

The pleated skirt is the ultimatehrowback piece this fall. Basic black is always a winner but don’t be afraid to go for florals or even a red leather if you’re looking to kick it up a notch.

Try: Forever 21’s A-Line Faux Leather Skirt $15.80

5. Emerald Green

Dawned Pantone’s “it” color of 2013, emerald green has completely taken over the fall 2013 runways. Swipe this green onto your nails to add a dose of old school glamour and elegance to your first day of school.

Try: Essie Stylenomics $8

6. Beanies-

Knit beanies were all over fashion week. This practical, affordable, and subtly street accessory makes any outfit look stylish, hip, and cool.

Try: Asos’s Chunky Mixed Knit Boyfriend Beanie $17.54

  1. Classic prints

Sick of floral and decorative prints? This trend is perfect for you. Menswear-inspired fabrics – like tweeds, and fleeces – in a classic houndstooth, for example, can add a chic yet classic touch to your first day of school outfit. Slip an oxford underneath a cable crewneck sweater for a cozy, slightly subtler, take on this classic-meets-contemporary trend.

Try: Topshop’s Check Embellished Tee $90.00

8. Plaid

A vamped-up tartan is one of the simplest ways to differentiate yourself from a sea of solid colors. While slightly preppy, plaid can also give your first day of school outfit a punky twist.

Try: Nasty Gal’s Nevermind Skater Skirt $42.00

9. The Loafer

Traditionally, loafers have been a menswear staple. But alas, times have changed. As they have been redesigned for women, this old classic has taken a decidedly feminine turn for the wearable. Slip into a modern take on slimmed down and buffed to a high-wattage shine.

Try: J Crew’s Biella Patent Loafer $228.00

10. Graphic Tees and Sweatshirts

Pair it with a pair of black skinnies, and your new loafers (ehem) or even under a blazer with a poppy statement necklace for an outfit that looks both put together, and “I Don’t Care” cool.

Try: Chicwish’s Skull Studs Burn-out T-shirt in Black $9.90
