Taylor Swift, we love you for your catchy, feel-good lyrics, for your knack of snagging (ever so briefly) every A-list hottie in Hollywood, and for your tireless ability to appear flabbergasted whenever you receive an award. There’s no denying that our girl T-Swift is a talented artist and a savvy self-marketer. But a feminist? No, we’re not sure that’s a claim anyone can make. That is, until now.
“I don’t know about you / But I’m feeling 22 / cents underpaid on the dollar.”
That’s just the type of lyric you’ll find on the hottest new Twitter account, FeministTaylorSwift, created by Her Campus’s own Sales and Marketing Intern Clara Beyer, a rising senior at Brown University. Caught between her feminist ideals and her love for Taylor Swift, Clara created the account to assuage her guilt. Through @FeministTSwift, Clara is able to take Taylor’s most questionably patriarchal lyrics and give them an empowering twist. Catchy and supporting gender equality—it doesn’t get any better than that!
The account, created three days ago, has already generated more than 25,000 followers, and that number is growing rapidly by the moment. Fellow T-Swift loving feminists everywhere are already joining in on the fun and trying their hand at their own feminist-inspired lyrics. Clara is hoping that @FeministTSwift will generate enough popularity to get Taylor herself to respond to the account. One thing is for certain at least: we will never ever ever listen to Taylor Swift the same way again. Way to go, Clara!
