Make a Statement Without Saying a Word: The Top Accessory Trend for Summer 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

College fashionistas on Hawk Hill have been well-aware of the statement necklace trend that has over powered other trendy accessories this season. Whether at your formal, in your class, or our to lunch with your bestie, statement necklaces fit the scene and live up to their name. Bold, bright, and attention grabbing, the statement necklace is an essential item in your wardrobe and we’re breaking down exactly where to find the best statement pieces and how to wear the accessory of the summer at every occasion:

How to wear a statement necklace: to your internship

Although it was your stand-out motivation, academics and personable interview skills that landed you the internship of your dreams (or one that’s close enough) this summer, appearance will factor into the company’s opinion about you as an intern. These three months of your summer will provide insight and opportunities to future career decisions – and appropriate internship attire speaks before you do!  Utilize a statement necklace to create a memorable and stylish look, without being dressed inappropriately for an office setting.

Internship Do’s

-Do allow the statement necklace to be the focal point of the outfit

-Do chose complementary outfit colors

-Do wear simple stud earrings or none at all

Internship Don’ts

-Don’t choose a necklace with more than three colors

-Don’t wear statement earrings

-Don’t wear a statement necklace with an overwhelming number of gemstones

How to wear a statement necklace: to a family function

Sunshine and summertime mean outdoor gatherings with family and friends. A statement piece is the perfect pop of color around the picnic table this summer. Upgrade your basics with a bold statement necklace to make the annual Fourth of July barbecue even more memorable.

Family Function Do’s

-Do pair your statement piece against a chambray, solid, or nuetral shirt

-Do choose a shirt that is conservative with an approrpriate neckline

-Do coordinate the necklace with a solid or nuetral bags and pair of sandals

Family Function Don’ts

-Don’t over do it! Don’t pile on a statement necklace with a statement bangle, shoes with gemstones or a flashy bag

-Don’t wear a plungnig neckline, or a neckline that interfers with the lay of necklace

-Don’t wear a necklace that is overly extravagent

How to wear a statement necklace: to dinner with your best friend’s parents

The warm weather can put women off about dressing formally during the summer months, but weddings, graduations, and formal dinners with your new boyfriend’s parents are a perfect excuse to infuse bright summer colors into your more reserved wardrobe – and the statement necklace is an ideal way to do so. The necklace should be paired against a solid color such as, white, or black. Wear nude shoes and other simple accessories to emphasis the piece. Don’t be afraid to wear the statement piece speckled with gemstones, or that is multi-colored if the venue is upscale. High occasions call for high fashion (that’s done right!).

Dinner Do’s

-Do wear a flashy, multi-colored necklace if it fits the venue

-Do your make up in complementary colors

-Do your nails a color found in the necklace

Dinner Don’ts

-Don’t wear too many colors if you’re wearing a multicolored necklace (stick to black, nuetrals or one or two complementary colors)

-Don’t carry a flashy bag

-Don’t clash the colors of your eyeshadow, lipstick or nailpolish with colors found in the necklace

How to wear a statement necklace: out on a summer night

Statement pieces were created to capture the eye. Try yours out for a night with your friends! It is sure to shine in pictures and draw the attention of that cute boy across the room!

Summer Night Out Do’s

-Do pull your hair up to showcase the necklace

-Do choose a necklace that illuminates your face

-Do wear a multi-colored statement necklace with a solid colored top

Summer Night Out Don’ts

-Don’t over-accessorize

-Don’t combine patterned pieces of clothing with a multi-colored necklace

-Don’t clash the colors of your make up with the colors in your necklace
