How Do You Want To Spend Your Summer?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Merrimack chapter.

While it may be hard to believe, summer is quickly approaching. In a few short weeks we will be free of schoolwork and off campus. Now is the time to start planning how to spend your days. While lounging by the pool or going to the beach are great options here and there, there should be some substance to how you are spending your time. No matter what your situation is there are great options to do this summer that will help you get ahead!

If you’re someone that is looking at your future career path, an internship is definitely the route for you. By taking on an internship you will get first hand experience whether or not this is something you’d want to do the rest of your life. It will also help you network and make connections to those who could be hiring you in the future. Be sure to go to the O’Brien Center for student success and they will help you every step of the way, including helping you with your resume. Keep an open mind when looking and landing one of these internships.

There are plenty of fun summer jobs that don’t require you to be a cashier at your local supermarket or wait tables. If you love kids try finding a babysitting job close to you. If you use sittercity.com or care.com you can be matched with families in your area that are willing to pay what you’re asking. Babysitting is great because it’s all under the table so you’re not losing a portion of money to taxes. If kids aren’t your thing you could always look at local stores that are your favorite. If these places are hiring you can not only score a paycheck but get a great discount on their items that you love. If you’re not too far from a beach, working at an ice cream place or shop along the boardwalk is also a great option. You can be close to the water, have a care free summer feel to your job, and be within walking distance of the waves once you get off your shift.

If you’re lucky enough to have some cash saved up and don’t feel like working this summer, plan a trip. See the world if you can, there are great travel options for students to travel so look into them. Backpacking trips are offered around Europe so grab a friend and see the amazing sights across the Atlantic. Although it may be a little late you could still try and register for a course offered somewhere else in the world and do a study abroad option. This will not only allow you to see other places, it will let you earn credits and make new friends. Another option is renting a beach house with some friends for a week and hanging by the shore. By splitting the price of the house it won’t be outrageous and you can make some great memories.

No matter what you have in mind this summer make the most of it. There are plenty of ways to spend summer that will fit your personality and what you want to do. Whether it be all fun in the sun or wearing a blazer to impress future employers, make sure you save time for yourself.
