Spring Breakers Movie Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

Spraanggggg Breaaaaaaaaakkkk, Spraanggggg Breaaaaaaaaaaakkkkk.

-Alien (James Franco)

All around the world, fans have been waiting for Spring Breakers to come on the big screen. But, here in Saint Petersburg, where the movie was filmed, students from USFSP were dying to see if they had made it in the final cut of the film.

Being filmed around the city where we go to school, students were eager to see how the movie turned out. Being an extra myself, I was curious to see what kind of movie I was thrown into. And yes, I did see the back of my head (haha) and a few of my fellow friends/classmates in the movie! I saw it the day after it came out and the theater was roaring with “oh I see you” and “look, there I am.”

This movie is rated R and I’ve seen rated R movies before. What stunned me was that there was cop outside the actual theater door checking I.D.’s and tickets before I could go in and get my seat. I didn’t understand how provocative this movie was until the opening scene. If you do NOT like bouncing boobs in your face, I don’t suggest watching it…. but who doesn’t?

NOW, onto the part everyone is waiting for. What was the big deal? Why was everyone patiently (or not so patiently) awaiting this movies arrival?

First off, James Franco is a beauty to watch and even with his grills and cornrows, he’s still my number one celebrity crush. And for the guys, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine, were the main focus. These popular Hollywood celebrities played roles that I would never picture them signing up for. The girls were raunchy and very not Disney and I was taken by surprise. James Franco, once again, did a great job at portraying a rapper/drug dealer from the 727. His ability to play any role in any type of movie never ceases to amaze me. I don’t want to give too much away but this movie is definitely a satire; nothing to be taken seriously. The ridiculous dialogue and actions made me laugh so hard and the way some parts were dragged out, made the sarcasm even better. The best part was that I’m almost 100% sure the entire movie was ad-libbed.

If you were to go watch it, please keep in mind this movie is not supposed to be taken seriously. Rotten Tomatoes gave this movie a 69%, a mere 1% shy of Les Miserable. I’m sure the critics caught on to director, Harmony Korines’, satirist movie.

I HIGHLY recommend anyone to go watch this!
