You thought the first date went great. You were charming, funny, and dressed to the nines. But there is only one problem: He hasn’t called you back since. To make sure you make it past date No. 1, here are a few things to avoid:
1. Being a Text-a-holic
If there is anything that can ruin a conversation, it is constantly checking your phone for text messages. If you wanted to talk to your friends, you probably should have had a girl’s night instead of a date night. When you are trying to get to know someone on a first date, it’s best to turn your phone off… and that doesn’t mean on vibrate. Even if you don’t think he will care if you send a quick text or check your Facebook, he’s going to get a little peeved. Show him you are a down-to-Earth girl who doesn’t constantly need technology by focusing on him rather than the phone.
2. “Me, Myself and I” Syndrome
Ladies, dating is a two way street. You can’t talk about yourself for two hours straight and not expect his eyes to droop a little. Keep the conversation going by finding some common ground. Sure, he might have a big grin on his face while you talk about your new diet regimen, but on the inside he may be thinking, “Jeez, can I get a word in edgewise?”
3. Hooking up on the First Date
If you want him to think you are girlfriend material, don’t give it up on the first date. He might not be able to help but wonder how many other guys you have been with. Keep it classy, and take things slow. Leaving some mystery will most likely constitute him asking for a second date.
4. Talking about Other Guys
This is a definite dating no-no. If he asks you about past relationships, that is one thing, but do not voluntarily talk about your exes or past hookups. I assure you he does not want to hear about it. Give the guy some respect, and leave the boy talk for your girlfriends. Plus, I’m sure if he talked about girls all night you would write him off as a grade-A jerk.
5. Happy Hour, Power Hour
Slow down on the drink specials. Even if you think this will make it easier to talk or relieve your first date jitters, limit yourself to how much you will drink. Odds are you will get a little too sloppy or say something embarrassing. And no one wants that.
