PCB Boys vs. Denison Boys

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Denison chapter.

After spending my spring break in Panama City Beach, I think it’s safe to say that

there is a big difference between the boys I met in Panama City and the boys I’ve
met at Denison. Walking into your average bar in PCB is nothing like walking into
a sunny apartment. For starters, expect to pay a $20-$40 coverage charge just to
get in. Not only is this ridiculous coverage charge a major bummer to your night,
the minute you step into the bar, you can expect to be approached by several “too-
available” boys wearing wife beaters and cargo shorts. Their style is only one big
difference between them and the boys in Granville. Here are some others!

1. PCB boys are very direct:
At Denison, trying to figure out if the boy you’ve been talking to all night is
interested in you is like trying to figure out this Ohio weather. Hopeless and
confusing. However, in PCB, I’d say a conversation with a boy would only last
about 3-5 minutes before he asks, “where are you staying?” or “want to come
back to my place?” In which case, you step back and think, “I literally just
learned your name,” and then you run because prince charming should be a
little more discrete.

2. PCB boys are very complimentary:
While most girls enjoy a compliment or two, the boys in PCB take
complimenting to the extreme, almost to a point where you wish you had
worn your turtleneck out. A casual walk to the bathroom with friends
includes, on average, 3 stops by boys who say “wow” “look at you” or even
(and this was actually said) “I came 6,000 miles to see a girl like you!” This is
extremely opposite of most boys at Denison who would not even come close
to saying “you have a great smile” even if they’re thinking it.

3. PCB boys are not afraid of rejection:
While this sounds like a nice thing: someone who is confident enough to
pursue you, it comes off as terrifying in Panama City. The boys in PCB
have no problem asking for your phone number. A friend of mine made
the mistake of giving her actual one and had double, triple, even quadruple
texts from him. “Where are you?” “Come to my place.” “Why aren’t you
answering?” This boy had no fear of rejection and even though he probably
couldn’t pick my friend out of a crowd, he had no problem asking her out.
Denison boys would most likely not do this unless they really liked the girl.
The fear of rejection makes the boys here a little more intriguing than the
extremely overconfident PCB boys.

4. Denison boys may move on fast, but PCB boys move even faster:
It may seem like the boy you thought was perfect at Denison moved on from
you to the next in the blink of an eye; however, PCB boys don’t even learn
where you are from before they are chasing the next best thing. While you
may feel special for all of 7 seconds, I would suggest not getting your hopes
up about any PCB boy who approaches you. Just remember that he probably
doesn’t know your name (even though you just told him) and while he’s
“talking” to you, he is scanning the crowd for someone better. At least that
guy at Denison knew a little bit about you before moving on.

Panama City Beach for spring break is a one-time experience. I would not
advise any husband hunters to keep their hopes up, however,
it does make me a little more appreciative of the boys here at Denison. They
may not say or do the right things all the time, but they don’t wear cargo
shorts and wife beaters, they usually know you name, and their indirectness
makes them that much more interesting.

To all those boys in PCB, I wish you the best of luck with your ladies.

When she's not writing for class or Her Campus, you can find her re-watching The Hills episodes.
Kaitlin is a sophomore at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She is currently studying Economics with a minor in Communication. When Kaitlin isn't studying, you can find her attending events for her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, writing articles, playing tennis, or watching Bravo obsessively.  As a Bravo fangirl, she would love to meet Andy Cohen.
