Â
A few weeks ago, I wrote about the Cal Men’s basketball team and their solid record in the 2012-2013 season. This week I would like to call to your attention to our stellar Women’s basketball team, and their achievements on and off the court.
The women’s basketball team had a stunning 28-3 overall record this season, and a record of 16-1 in conference play. Â At the Pac-12 Tournament in early March, they trounced USC 78-59, but then lost to UCLA, 70-58. Â
Â
These women dominated the Pac-12 as a team, but their individual accomplishments were just as impressive. Â In February 2013, senior point guard Layshia Clarendon was named Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the year, with a cumulative GPA of 3.47 in American studies. Â She was also the leading scorer on the team, averaging 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. Â
Â
Last time, I noted that basketball at Cal usually does not elicit the same amount of excitement and enthusiasm in the student population as does football, and this applies to the women’s as well as the men’s teams. Â That’s a real shame, and I wish I’d been aware of their accomplishments earlier. Â The women on the basketball team are an inspiration to me and hopefully now to you, as students, as athletes, and as women.
