Spring is on the horizon (we hope!) and to bid good-bye to this eternal winter HCX suggests shaking things up and adding a new lease of life to your makeup bag. Minimal make-up and glowing skin are great for this time of year and HCX is here to introduce you to the wonder of highlighters, a holy grail essential in any girl’s make-up repertoire.

Cream and liquid highlighters are great for achieving a natural look that will give your skin that extra oomph whereas powder highlighters tend to sit more noticeably on the skin. The key with highlighters is to find a product that will blend seamlessly in with your skin tone and the rest of your makeup, as this will help achieve a subtle ‘healthy skin’ look.  The skin is made up with multiple colours so a highlighter with many different shades of pearl rather than just one will work best.

Highlighters should be applied to the high-points and contours of the face. Cream and liquid highlighters are best applied with a brush or fingers. Apply product to the high points of the cheekbone and up to the brow bone in a ‘C’ or ‘half-moon’ shape. Highlighters also work well applied down the bridge of the nose and in the inner corner of your eyes. The product should be blended well with the rest of your make-up, so there are no stark lines. If you apply it in too-heavy blocks it will show up in photos and give you an awful streaky look! We want to avoid appearing like we have something overtly shiny and iridescent plastered onto our face.

There are a tons of highlighters on the market and the right product for you depends on the colour of your skin and the look you are going for. For general day to day wear and a more natural look HCX recommends ‘Lancôme Éclat Miracle’ (£21). This beautiful product is very natural and adds a subtle highlight to your face. It is highly recommended for a wide range of skin tones. Other products that are suited to more specific skin tones include; The Body Shop radiant highlighter, for pale skins, No.7 Skin Highlighter in Peach for medium skin tones and for darker skin tones, ELF Toasted Stick.

For nights out, and the more brazen ladies out there, a product that contains glitter can be a fun way to add that extra bit of sparkle. The NARS highlighter sticks are great for this as they contain more noticeable flecks of glitter without being too OTT, but a word of warning, they are a bit of a splurge at ÂŁ30.

One too many nights out fuelled by double vodkas and ending in a delightful, but less than nutritious, large cheesy chips (the horror), means our skin can be lacking in that much desired healthy glow. Hopefully this article has shown you light. With the help of highlighters we can achieve that dewy, slept for days, drink gallons of water and snack only on blueberries look.
