Style Blog: What to Wear in Florence

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

Florence is a small city, but it is by far one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, with many hidden gems inside it. Although many of these gems include restaurants and gelaterias, the shopping in this city is yet another thing that makes Florence special.

Everyone knows the traditional things that make Florence so famous, pasta and pizza, but what everyone doesn’t know is that this city is full of trends and styles that everyone must have.

Leather is one of the number one things to get while visiting, or like me while living, in Florence. It is the best quality of leather you can get and almost always you can find a great price, whether it be gloves, bags or jackets.

Ask any girl who has gone or is abroad at the moment, Massimo is your man when dealing with leather jackets. He has outfitted every abroad girl to ever come to Florence and the jackets are incredible. He has a gift for picking out a jacket for you to try on and having it be exactly what you’re looking for.

In Florence, the typical trend of only wearing your leather jacket as a warm, but convenient jacket when going to the bars at night is a thing of the past. Here, leather jackets are worn daily paired with a graphic tee or a lightweight sweater and a scarf. It is the perfect way to master the casual, yet European trend when visiting the gardens for the afternoon or even just going to class.

Another trend seen throughout those living in Florence, whether it is the native Florentines or the American abroad students that you can’t help but run into, is the army green jacket.  These lightweight, army styled jackets are great for the warmer spring days just around the corner and are often paired with a colorful or print scarf. These jackets are a nice change in pace from the long, puffy coats worn during winter.

As you can see, each outfit requires some sort of scarf for it to be complete. This is because Florence is the scarf-capital of Europe. You can’t walk down a street without seeing a vendor selling great scarves for very cheap prices. Whether it be an eternity scarf, a printed one or just a plain pashmina in a solid color, no true Italian outfit is complete without one.
