Thought all celebs were a few sandwiches short of a picnic? Her Campus Exeter begs to differ…
  1. Emma Watson

Playing Hermione Granger seems to have rubbed off on Emma Watson. She gained 8 A* and two A grade GCSEs, followed by three A grade A-levels in Geography, Art and English Literature. She moved to America to study at Brown University, taking the odd semester off for filming and working on fashion projects, before returning to the UK to study English at Worcester College, Oxford. She’s crazy rich, insanely beautiful, and intellectually gifted. We are so very, very jealous. Accio Emma Watson’s life.

  1. Matt Damon

It seems Harvard is a breeding ground for future Oscar winners. Star of the Bourne Trilogy, Matt Damon was accepted into the University to major in English Literature. Damon was always a keen actor participating in various theatrical productions and dropped out of Harvard to pursue his acting career. This ambitious move has proven to be the right decision as not only has he had starring roles in blockbusters such as “Saving Private Ryan” but, he also co-wrote “Good Will Hunting” with close friend Ben Affleck (winning an Oscar in the process). Not bad for a University drop out.

  1. Natalie Portman

She may be best known for her Academy Award winning performance in Black Swan, not to mention her role in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, which had men all over the globe prepared to get their light sabres out on her behalf, but there is more to Natalie Portman than her stellar acting skills, and stunning good looks. The actress studied at the prestigious Harvard University and obtained a degree in Psychology. Portman has also guest lectured at Columbia University and has gone on to take graduate courses at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. If that wasn’t enough, she is also fluent in five different languages! It seems the phrase ‘You can’t have beauty and brains’ doesn’t apply to Natalie.

4. Emeli Sandé

There’s a lot more to Emeli SandĂ© than her Brit award-winning singing voice and piano expertise. She wrote her first song when she was just eleven years old and has composed tracks for tons of artists, including Rihanna, Cheryl Cole, Tinie Tempah and Leona Lewis. Outside of the world of music, SandĂ© spent four years at the University of Glasgow studying Medicine, specialising in Clinical Neuro-Science, we might add, before dropping out when her music career took off. The singer is also artistically inclined, with a tattoo of artist Frida Kahlo on her arm.

  1. Hugh Grant

He’s the renowned comedic charmer who is sure to make any rom-com he stars in a success. But behind his funny man exterior, it seems Hugh Grant owns a pretty impressive set of brain cells too.  Grant attended the independent West London Latymer Upper School and then went on to win the Galsworthy scholarship to New College, Oxford University. Here he studied English Literature and graduated with a 2:1 honours.  He then went on to receive an offer from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London to undertake a PhD in the History or Art. This may have just increased our secret attraction to Hugh Grant tenfold. “After all
I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her” (had to get a Notting Hill quote in there somewhere!)

So next time you think all celebrities are a little dim, remember these top 5 smarties who proved you can have brains and star quality.

Laura is a third year English Literature student at the University of Exeter. Laura has been a member of Her Campus since 2012, when she decided it was time to actually get involved in something CV worthy. Since joining HCX Laura has been heavily involved with the Culture team writing on everything from film reviews to blogging about what to do on your day off. Having never been involved in journalism before Laura has been pleasantly surprised by how much she has enjoyed her time at HCX. This year Laura is lucky enough to be the editor of Local Culture, and is relishing the excuse to explore Exeter in search of article ideas instead of tackling her extensive reading list. When Laura isn't writing for Her Campus, or staring aimlessly at her laptop in the library hoping a first class essay will miraculously appear, she loves to socialise with friends and explore the area surrounding Exeter (especially if it involves a beach). This summer Laura will be interning at OK! Magazine in their online department, as well as gaining work experience in the press office at Arsenal Football Club. Laura will also be relaxing with friends and family and booking as many holidays as possible. After University Laura wants to pursue a career in public relations in the travel and lifestyle industries. She intends to put off becoming an adult for at least another year by embarking on the classic 'gap year' experience and travelling the world- all in the aid of her future career of course...
