Heifer International Inspires Women on International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day, and Heifer International is taking action to celebrate women across the globe. The non-profit organization is dedicated to ending world hunger and poverty. In addition to sharing compelling and powerful stories with their sponsors and supporters, Heifer has implemented an International Women’s Day page on their website where people can donate money or share information through social media.

Heifer has strived to end poverty through projects that are driven by women. Through providing women in impoverished communities with the tools, assistance, and training that are necessary to enhance food production, Heifer has helped women across the globe build and maintain sustainable income. Heifer places assets of knowledge and animals directly into the hands of women farmers, empowering women to quickly convert their gifts into food and income-generated ventures. This helps women send their children to school, pay medical bills, and ultimately lift themselves out of poverty.

Heifer wants women across the globe to know that it is possible to escape poverty with work and proper knowledge. 20-year-old Dhankumari Lama of Nepal had to leave school at the young age of 14 because her parents couldn’t afford to pay for her education, and they were setting up her marriage. At age 16, she became the youngest member of Heifer’s self-help group for women where she was encouraged to pursue her passion for reading and writing. In fact, the help group helped her raise enough money to enroll in a local school and continue her education. Today, she is pursuing a degree in business, an accomplishment that is unheard of for women in her village.

Heifer has empowered impoverished women to accomplish what once seemed to be impossible. Today, celebrate the woman you are and know that anything is possible if you put your mind to it! What are you doing to celebrate International Women’s Day today? Comment below!
