Hilariously sarcastic, Molly Nicholson is an overachieving second-year junior from Dunwoody, Georgia. Nicholson is the copy editor of Pandora Yearbook, the official yearbook of the University of Georgia. The Public Relations major and German minor plans to graduate in December 2014.
What are you involved in at UGA?
I spend my time at WUOG, UGA’s radio station, as well as the Red & Black. I work in the advising offices in the freshman dorms and used to work in O House Dining Hall. I’m a member of the German Student Organization, as well as the PR coordinator of the OZ (Orphans of Zambia) Project. I also recently joined PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America). Of course, my passion is Pandora Yearbook.
What goes into being a copy editor?
Being a copy editor for a history book such as Pandora actually demands a lot of research. I am constantly looking up events, scores, and yes, even students’ email addresses. Hypothetically, every word and grammatical structure that ends up in the yearbook goes through me. With the help of the program’s Executive Board, I decide which stories go into the book, and then work with the Copy Staff to make sure that everything gets distributed and covered by deadline. Since many people on our staff this year are new to college and Pandora, I also spend a lot of time teaching people the unique way to write for a yearbook that comes out months after they finish their story.
How do you balance school, activities, and life?
I have a great support system in my friends, most of whom are just as busy as I am, as well as the people I work with. They have helped me to realize that college is all about mastering this balance, but also that it is necessary to take a step back from everything (school included) when stress begins to take over. I am also lucky to be in Grady, because the school really emphasizes involvement outside of the classroom and provides both opportunities as well as training. In all aspects of my life, I am constantly making lists — Post-It notes were invented for me!
