Why You Should Be Watching HBO’s “Girls”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

If you haven’t already heard of it, Girls is a TV series on HBO that discusses real-world issues with humor and collegiette relativity. Only in its second season, Girls is not hard to catch up on and the episodes are all under thirty minutes, the perfect length for a quick study break. Sometimes compared to Sex and The City, Girls tells the story of four friends living in Brooklyn as they struggle to find themselves after college. Not exactly the glamour of Sex and The City, but that’s part of the charm of Girls.

Girls features a realistic, and therefore relatable, depiction of what post-grad life may be like. Complete with awkward encounters, stories and flashbacks to college life, the show deals with real-world issues such as sexuality, abortion, financial issues, and STDs with seemingly effortless humor (hard to believe when covering such intense topics). From drama with boys or with their parents, the four main characters, Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, and Jessa, each bring their unique and interesting perspectives to each problem they face. Hannah, the main character, deals with her weight and a semi-crazy boyfriend while also being cut off from her parents financially and struggling with finding a job. Sounds like a downer, but not at all! These encounters are always faced with humor, friendship, and love, not to mention girl power.

Because each character is so realistic, it is really easy to identify with one or all of them. I’ve overheard people say, “I’m usually such a Marnie, but right now I’m being a Jessa.” Every episode showcases different personality traits and reveals something new about each character, so these relationships are constantly developing and becoming even more relatable. Since the characters are all in their twenties, their issues are very similar to those we as college students face, or those we are scared to face post-graduation. Sometimes watching Girls can make you appreciate the things you have and can reassure you that you don’t have it quite as bad as you think. Through the show you can realize that you are not the only one facing a particular dilemma.

The boys featured in this show are almost as hilarious as the girls. Each girl comes with one or many boys that they interact with and these interactions are explicit and hysterical. From clingy boyfriends they can’t seem to shake off, to those they wish they could keep, the boys add another layer of realism and comedy to the show.

The best reason to watch Girls is the sheer entertainment, joy, and humor of it. Each episode tackles issues facing girls of our generation, but in a way where you can’t help but say, “I would have done the same thing” and laugh at the awkwardness that comes with being a twenty-something.

If I can’t convince you to watch Girls, let the main character Hannah convince you. Here are the 23 most relatable Hannah quotes
