Spring Pastels!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

With the weather getting noticeably warmer (adios single-digit days), and spring break getting closer, one thing I know I always look forward to is packing my pullovers and busting out the blouses.

This post, we’re going to focus on the pastel palette and how to dress fre$h like a spring rain and not like an Easter egg.

Pastels:

Also considered neutral in tone, these colors are light and easy on the eyes. They can be paired together like other colors, maybe even more so, as they don’t really ever overwhelm considering they’re so weightless.

They come in a variety of shades, and although you might want to tailor which you choose as you would any color, most shades tend to look good on most people. If you don’t want to look too much like a walking peony, you could always pair the top as you would any shirt, with jeans or leggings to ground it with a darker hue. There’s also the option of adding in small pops of pastel by sporting accessories of the shades: nail polishes, backpacks/purses, shoes, etc.

As you can see, there are plenty of different items in pastel hues. If you want to spice up the outfit, you could always add in a little hardware. Gold and silver look great with the pastel backdrop (I usually pair gold with pale bules and pinks while saving silver for yellows and greens). Personally, I love pastels because they’re light and easy to layer. You can wear an assortment of colors and they seem to echo the energy and vibrancy of springtime; pastels just have a way of bringing out the inner sunshine in all of us (scale of 1-10, how corny was that?).

In case you were unmoved or have a beef with pastels, here are some other trends that were spotted on the runway this past fashion week:

·      Vibrant Stripes: a lot of mod-inspired styles were featured by designers like Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors. The black and white stripes were made into two-piece suits, high-waisted bottoms, and cropped tops.

·      Sport Wear: Nasty Gal (nastygal.com<http://nastygal.com>) has been a headliner in promoting varsity jackets, wedges sneakers, and athletic spandex in fashion-forward ways. Looks like a lot of athletes have been ahead of the curve!

·      Bright Sunglasses: A few weeks ago, I was in Urban Outfitters and they seemed to have gotten the message (and a few sales along the way). Statements sunglasses are a great way to jazz up a relatively plain outfit and draw attention to a new hairdo.

That being said, happy (imminent) spring everyone! Don’t worry, break is closer than you think!
