The Rocky Horror Picture Show has a well-known reputation. It was first written as a stage play in London, and soon traveled to Los Angeles to make its Broadway debut. Afterward, it was adapted into the infamous feature film starring Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon, which quickly developed a worldwide cult following. Having been a long-time fan myself, I have always wanted to go to a midnight shadow cast performance of the movie, which is a group of Rocky Horror enthusiasts who perform the movie while it is playing on a screen behind them. The audience members all dress in character and the cast members directly involve them with the performance. It have always wanted to go to one, and I’ve finally decided to gather my friends and go! After Google-ing “Live Rocky Horror Performances in LA” and several variations of it, I found the group that seems as though it will give me the best first-time experience. Sins O’ The Flesh is a theatre troupe that performs every Saturday night at the Nuart Theatre in Santa Monica. Traditionally, the cast will do something special for audience members who have never been to a live performance before (usually involving whipped cream). Sins O’ The Flesh will not disappoint. Right on their Facebook page they’ve written, “If you’ve never seen a live performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Sins o’ the Flesh will be happy to take your virginity and corrupt you as thoroughly as we are able.” I originally planned to lie and say that I had been to many-a-midnight showing, but I think that the true Rocky Horror mentality should be “go big or go home.” I decided that I want the full experience, despite the amount of embarrassment for which I know I’m in store. For those readers who have never heard of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, I highly encourage you to watch it. It’s certainly not for everyone, but there is a reason that it’s a cult favorite. For those of you who already know and love Rocky Horror, I hope this will prompt you to go to a midnight showing as well!
