A Style Guide To Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

For most college students, the anticipation of spring break has reached its peak. Forget about paying attention in class; your mind is filled with thoughts of hitting the beach and relaxing poolside. But, you may have forgotten about the daunting task of packing for a week at the beach. Whether you are loading up the car and driving with friends or flying under strict airline baggage policies, check out my tips on how to pack light and still have a variety of stylish options for the beach, an afternoon lunch and a night out.

A dress that can double as a beachy day dress and an evening dinner dress is always your best bet for beach vacations. In my years of traveling, I’ve found that when packing space is limited, versatile pieces can be a girl’s best friend. This “Mighty Aphrodite Pink Dress” (shown above) can be purchased at lulus.com, and at an affordable price. To take this dress from day-to-night, add a pair of nude pumps and classic jewelry.

Nasty Gal never fails when it comes to fun and versatile shorts. Shown above are two of my current favorites from the Nasty Gal online store: the “Hot Dot Scallop Shorts” or the “Gilded Lily Lace Shorts.” Both options would be perfect for a day of shopping or an early lunch. Bask in the sun and take advantage of the warm weather, while still looking stylish and put-together. Spring break is about having fun, so don’t be afraid to take fashion risks and experiment with your daytime looks.

Let’s not forget about the most important part: beach wear! If you are like me, a majority of your time will be spent in your swimsuit. So, you’ll want to make sure you have one – or several – that you feel great in. Above are several options for varying body types and personalities.

With white fringe detailing across the bust, this white bandeau bikini option from Urban Outfitters will show off your fun side, and allow you to mix and match beach accessories. Take a tip from the model shown above and incorporate a hat into your beachy ensemble. Not only are retro caps a fun fashion statement, but they also offer protection from harmful UV sun rays.

If you are not comfortable showing too much skin, or would rather wear a suit with straps, check out this blue “AE Corset Bikini Top” suit by American Eagle Outfitters or this retro-inspired “Lolli Peplum One-Piece Swimsuit” by Urban Outfitters. Both of these fashionable options will allow you the freedom to frolic on the beach and avoid any wardrobe malfunctions. (Yikes!)

Packing for the beach never seemed so easy. In addition to these beach vacation essentials, don’t forget to pack sandals, a few tank tops and a light jacket to complete your spring break wardrobe. Enjoy!Â
