You must have been living under a rock if you haven’t noticed that there have been patterns scattered across every item of clothing you could think of. From florals and Aztec, to monochrome and geometric, they are everywhere and if you want to stay on trend this season, I’d advise you to keep reading!
With Spring just around the corner it’s time to embrace that fresh feeling Spring brings with it. The clear blue skies, the sun shining and the need for only a cardigan to keep you warm from that Spring breeze mean that you can get all flirty and feminine in floral pattern. This is a favourite trend of mine because although it is a fairly girly look you can always find a way to toughen up the look and a little more attitude. Floral prints are a regular at shows like Valentino, Erdem and often Oscar De La Renta in pretty strappy sun dresses, ball gown style midi skirts and embellished clutches. To get the look at a much lower price you can find floral print everywhere and anywhere on the high street. H+M and Zara have both got some great pieces in right now, including a chic pair of floral print cigarette trousers.
The next pattern that is having a moment is Aztec. You will have most likely seen this on so many backpacks across campus and the high street but the print does also extend to other pieces of clothing. Just the other week I picked up a cool embroidered Aztec mini skirt from Topshop, that I will definitely be wearing throughout the next few seasons, with tights when it’s cold and bare legged when I’m feeling brave enough. Check out the high street for printed vests, camisoles and t-shirts this Spring because they’ll look great come Summer when you’re packing your bag to go to a number of music festivals. Wear with high waisted shorts or skinny jeans to finish the look.
Next up, I’d like to focus on geometric patterns. Most of us are already starting to reach the point where we actually have to start thinking about that essay that’s looming or mid-term exam. So why not embrace it and get in the mood for working in a geometric pattern. Maths becomes seriously cool when you can wear it on a printed dress. It was a big trend on the runway at Michael Kors, Proenza Schouler and Helmut Lang and there’s no reason why you can’t wear the trend too. I’d advise going for a mini or midi dress in a geometric pattern so you can carry it through Spring to Summer but if you don’t feel brave enough than try just adding a printed clutch or box bag to your outfit for an instant style update.
So there you have it. Patterns are big this season and there is no escaping them, so whichever one catches your eye, make it your own and wear with attitude. You’ll soon be mistaken for a model still hanging around after London Fashion Week and that doesn’t seem like a bad thing at all – especially when you’re a student with a very poor looking bank account now I’ve sent you shopping for patterns!
