As we approach our midterms, each and every one of us on campus is facing our own personal battle with stress. Stress can manifest in many ways, but it isn’t always about schoolwork and deadlines. What about the stress that we put on our bodies? As many as 25% of college students nationwide struggle with eating disorders that place stress on both their bodies and their minds, and it isn’t something they choose. Like any other illness, these disorders can get better with treatment.
Join Her Campus Skidmore in honoring this year’s National Eating Disorder Awareness Week because as this week’s theme states, “Everybody Knows Somebody.” The average age for the development of anorexia and bulimia is between 18 and 20 years old. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness about these disorders and reduce the stigma attached to them, all in the hopes of preventing college students like us from having to battle the illnesses ourselves. We’ve started doing our part to raise awareness this week by leaving Post-It affirmation notes on mirrors and in bathrooms across campus – love yourself, love your mind, love your body. Find out how you can do your part at NEDA.
If you or anyone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, Skidmore has several outlets to help. Campus groups such as H.I.P.S and Active Minds serve as on-campus resources for aid and information, as does the Counseling Center in Jonsson Tower.
