Megan’s Map: Inside the Abandoned Building, Fulton Gas Works

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

All over the world, cities are known for their mysterious abandoned buildings. Here in Richmond, we are not in short supply of them. Most of Richmond’s buildings that are abandoned, are either structurally unsafe to go into or run over by the homeless. Fulton Gas Works is one of Richmond’s most photographed buildings because of its size, location and the sure decay and neglected buildings.

Fulton Gas Works, located southeast of downtown Richmond, was known since 1856 for converting coal into gas to light in Richmond’s buildings and streets. Fulton Gas Works has been included in the flood plans for 100 and 500 years since it is right next to the James River.

Within the buildings are the remains of former machinery, desks, chairs, chipped paint and the added graffiti from its random visitors. In the first building, where the making of gas started, the roof has collapsed making for an interesting assortment of broken beams and shingles splattered on the floor.

The second building would have been an overall boring building if it weren’t for its added graffiti work on the walls and the machinery.
