Real Live Southern Guy Jeremy: How to Use Touch to Get His Attention

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Southern Miss chapter.

A guaranteed way to make a guy notice you, without him noticing you noticed him first, is by learning to employ the art of touch. It is possible to have a conversation mostly, or even completely, without words. The male body is a beautiful collection of nerve endings and synaptic firings waiting to be stimulated by your well-timed and perfectly executed touch. You can take a guy from “Hello,” to “Follow me,” with just the tips of your fingers.

First things first: don’t touch him with gross-looking hands. I can’t stress how important nice hands are. Yes, it’s a bit shallow, but it’s just one of those things we can’t help. Man hands are only acceptable on a man. The first impression any human being gets about another is from appearance, so those hands need to be presentable. Here are a few tips to keep your hand hygiene perfect and prepare yourself for breaking the touch barrier.

  1. Use light creams. Shiny hands are distracting, and leaving oily marks on his skin is just gross.
  2. Carry moisturizer. Most of you do this already. It’s great in case you wash your hands a lot (which you should.)
  3. Clean your knuckles. This area often gets missed (as well as the skin between the thumb and index finger), which leaves bits of dirt and grime in your skin. Ew.
  4. Keep your nails to a reasonable length. Half an inch past the end of your finger is about the limit for most guys.

Now that we’ve tamed the talons, let’s categorize the caresses. There are many ways to touch a guy, and slight differences can carry a big difference in meaning. The five main kinds of contact are:

  1. Back of the Hand: This is a versatile move, and can be both seductive and unassuming.
  2. The Fingertips: This is quite sensual and very bold. There’s no way this is an accident.
  3. Palms: For intimacy and sustained contact. Not recommended for casual encounters.
  4. Grasping: For familiar situations only. There’s nothing like a good massage from your lady, but nothing creepier than one from a stranger.
  5. Shoulders: For getting attention and playfulness, nothing has quite the affect of bumping into him with your shoulder. This is especially good if you’re shorter than he is.

In high school, hitting was the go-to move. Now you’re upgrading to the more mature and efficient caress. This is flirting on a much more provocative scale.A few of these moves may take a little studying to get right, but trust me that their effectiveness is well worth the effort.  Follow these guidelines to have him eating out of the palm of your hand. (My apologies if he literally tries to lick your palm.)

  1. “The Bait” A simple shoulder rub will suffice. Don’t go bowling into him like a linebacker, but be graceful and keep your footing. Your movement should look like a subtler version of a cat at its owner’s ankles. Keep it soft and brief, but firm enough that he knows you’re there. Reel in and converse.
  2. “The Follow-Up” Strategize this one to reflect your personality. If you’re bold, try fingertips on the arm or wrist, but never the upper legs – that’s way too close. If you’re shy, try a nonchalant backhand to the mid or upper arm.
  3. “The Sprinkle” If you can keep him talking, then you can keep him guessing. Use this move as a subtle gesture while you’re listening to him talk. Backhands to above the elbow and to the upper torso say you’re unafraid, while fingertips anywhere say you’re on the prowl. Firm touches to his back let him know you can hang. Avoid the face and neck.
  4. “The Hint” Shoulders and palms are the major players at this point. If the flirt is successful, all you have to do is seal the deal. If you’re walking, this is the perfect opportunity to brush shoulders. This works well during a witty or suggestive line. If you’re in a loud or crowded place, you’ve got a golden ticket. This permits you to lightly grab anywhere from his wrist up or palm his shoulder and lean in.

  1. “The Command” This is a subtle way to let him know that you want him alone. The motion starts on the backside of the arm and comes around the outside, but never touches the front of his arm. Use your fingers and palm, but don’t grab his arm. Think of it as a pull without the clench. If you do this while backing up, it’s an easy way to say, “Follow me.”

Happy hunting.
