Three Ingredients for Homemade Hair Treatments

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

After a busy weekend your hair has been through a lot.  Because your hair has survived the smoke, spilled drinks, and accidental pulling at crowed bars, it needs some way to get repaired. Instead of spending upwards of $100 to get your hair healthy again, try some homemade hair treatments. Here are three ingredients that can make your hair shiny and smooth.

Again, if you’re allergic to these ingredients, don’t rub them into your hair.

1. Beer

While putting more drinks in your hair may seem counter intuitive, according to womansday.com, the yeast in beer helps plump up and volumize hair. The website says to use flat beer, so don’t worry about wasting a perfectly good beer on your hair care.  If you want to do the treatment but only have bubbly beer, pour beer in a container and let it sit for a couple of hours.  According to examiner.com, “the maltose and sucrose in beer help tighten up the hair’s cuticles, making them shinier.”

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Naturalnews.com says that apple cider vinegar better matches the pH level of hair. “Most of the hair care products we use today are alkaline, while our hair tends more toward the acid side of the pH scale.” The alkaline properties in our hair care products lead to the roughing up of the cuticle seal. “The seal is responsible for protecting the cortex of our hair where the melanin (color) is. [Breaking of the cuticle seal] leads to breakage, rough appearance, dryness, and a limp or dull appearance.” Apple cider vinegar helps protect the cuticle seal, adding shine and smoothing out hair.

3. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

According to naturallycurly.com, olive oil is not only a great conditioner, but “it’s also one of the top emollients that can penetrate the hair better than others, and its lightweight nature makes it great for moisturizing.”  Olive oil also has anti-inflammatory characteristics, which help improve scalp health and keep dandruff at bay. The vitamin E and monounsaturated fats also help promote hair growth.
