The Oscars are the highlight of the movie award season and probably red carpet season too. Stars dress in haute couture or tailored suits that fit like a glove, while we sit in the comfort of our living rooms looking not so #totesamaze.
The famous and talented attendees of the Academy Awards shouldn’t get to have all the fun and awards this Sunday night; us regular folk should too.
So, why not throw your own Oscars party? Oscars.org even offers an Oscar Party Kit.
Throwing this party will be no small task. The Oscars is a grand event that oozes sophistication and importance. Win an Oscar and your career means GOLD.
First you will need to spread the word and decide what time the event will start. Create a Facebook event and invite your friends, family or both. Describe the event, but leave room for imagination. Next, pick a time that works. You shouldn’t schedule the party to begin with the Oscars begin. Preferably start at the beginning of the red carpet show or before, if you and your friends are fashion aficionados.
Should there be a theme; glamour, gold, black tie, or Old Hollywood? You can definitely have one and have a dress code pertaining to each theme. However, you could also have your guests dress in their favorite character from nominated movies.
Anne Hathaway in Les Misérable, Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty or Sally Field in Lincoln. What about Denzel Washington in Flight?
To decorate or not to decorate? Of course you should decorate! It doesn’t have to be anything super fancy, chic or expensive. If you’re crafty and have some glitter, paper, scissors, glue, tissue paper and string you’re ready to go! I mean, you’ll probably need more supplies than that, but you don’t have to break the bank to create an Oscars vibe at your place.
For inspiration on decoration ideas check out Pinterest. The social networking site has tons of great ides and DIY posts it would be hard not to find something.
Food and beverages is probably just as important to this Oscars party as the nominees for Best Motion Picture. Bon Appétit has a great menu for throwing an Oscars
party. Puns are fun on their own, but when they involve food it’s even better.
Here are some puns from Bon Appétit, The Puzzler and one I came up with myself:
Life of Pie, Breasts of the Southern Wild, Gyro Dark Thirty, Mango Unchained, Armourange Juice, Feast of the Southern Wild: feast includes hushpuppies, mac and cheese bites, BBQ or fried chicken wings ; Salad Field and Hugh Flapjack.
Have fun with your menu, but remember you don’t have serve elaborate food or a six-course meal. Keep the food and drinks flowing, and everyone will be happy.
What kind of party would it be without any games? Not an Oscars Party because at the Oscars there’s always a winner(s).  Try your hand at Oscar bingo or red carpet bingo; it’s entertaining and gets you and your friends involved. Print out an Oscar ballot and have your friends choose their winners and at the end of the night the person with the highest score wins! You could give simple prizes away like candy, iTunes cards or DVDs.
At the end of the night when all is said and done, giving your guests swag bags will make them feel like VIP. Like I have said before, it doesn’t have to be anything expensive or flashy. Simple things like magazines, candy, beauty products and a thank you note can make for a great swag bag and the end to a memorable night.
