How do you make such a big school like the University of Florida, a massive school filled with thousands of people, seem a little smaller? Join a club of course. But with so many, where do you start? If you like to live life on the edge or try new activities, then there are plenty of options for you here in the Swamp. UF provides a full list of more than 900 student-run organizations at https://ufl.collegiatelink.net/organizations. The school has everything from comedy sketch clubs to yoga clubs, and new clubs are being added next year. Here are three well-organized, successful, and slightly out of the ordinary clubs on campus that would love to have you join them!
Objects in Motion (OIM)Â
We all wish we could have been in the circus at one point in our lives, and for some of us that dream still lives on. Tossing dangerous objects or unicycling around town are certainly talents few possess, but Objects in Motion would love to share its skills with you! It doesn’t matter if you’ve actually thrown something into the air and caught it again — all skill levels are welcome! They usually meet every other day at different places around campus, so if your schedule is tight, it’s not a problem!
Volaticus Aerial Dance ClubÂ
Have you ever been to Cirque du Soleil, seen those acrobats flipping around mid-air with grace and ease, and wish to be up there too? Well that’s exactly what Volaticus is all about. The group practices on Thursdays from 7 to 10 p.m; they warm up, drop down the silks, and trapeze from the ceilings for practice. It looks easy, sure, but that’s because performers we see in shows are extremely well-trained and have amazing body strength. Just climbing up the silks will make every single muscle in your arms feel sore for the next few days. They have a performance at the end of the year that anyone who has been practicing with them can be a part of. So if you’re dream has been to flip around in the middle of the air in front of a crowd or just for fun, maybe this club is for you.
Falling Gators Skydiving ClubÂ
So you’re an adrenaline junkie and like living life to the extremes, huh? Well strap on a suit and jump out of a plane with the Falling Gators Skydiving Club. This club loves the feeling of free falling and wants to share its passion! Whether one time falling straight down towards the ground is enough for you or not, the Falling Gators offer you plenty of options, for a price of course. The Falling Gators provide the Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) program that leads to being a certified skydiver. During the course you spend six to eight hours on land learning techniques and procedures and then skydive with an instructor seven times. If it’s on your bucket list, why not try it now?
Whether you enjoy having unique hobbies, or just want to try something new, check out the long list of clubs on campus and get involved.
You’ll make new friends and create amazing memories!
