Weekend Warrior: Should I Stay or Should I Go?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marquette chapter.

If you ask a Marquette student where they call home, I’d bet money that they’re from a suburb of Chicago. That being said, it’s not terribly difficult for these students to go home on the weekends. Marquette has a very active weekend culture, so this temporary migration is not usually a problem. However, for some students, going home on weekends is a must. While it is great to see family or old friends, this can cause you to miss out on all the fun being had on campus. On the other hand, sometimes you just need a break from papers, roommates and boy troubles at school. Mother knows best, and seeing her and the rest of your family can often put things into perspective. Here’s our list of pros and cons about spending weekends at home.

Pro: Free Laundry

We feel badly for listing this one first. After all, this is merely a perk. Seeing your family, playing with the dog, and finally being able to go to an Old Navy or Michaels in a safe part of town all top this perk. However, that doesn’t make mom doing your laundry any less sweet. She can iron your favorite blouse and you can save your quarters for next weekend’s party!

Con: Missing Belongings

The more frequently you go back and forth between home and school, the more likely you are to misplace your belongings. There’s nothing worse than getting ready for a party when your little black dress is back in your closet at home.

Pro: Home Cooked Meals

If you still live in the dorms, you’ll do anything in your power to avoid the dining halls. However, you’ll miss those dining halls when you live in apartment and you only have peanut butter and hot dog buns left in the pantry. There’s no arguing against going home and eating a home cooked meal. Whether you want your fill of healthy food, or just something warm and not store brand, home is the perfect place.

Con: Lack of Productivity

So you headed home to work on your midterm paper and to catch up on sleep. Your best friend from high school is in town, so you two catch a movie Friday night. Saturday night is family game night. Too bad you slept until two thirty Saturday morning and you have still not started your paper.

But wait…there’s more. If you feel strongly either way about going home or staying on campus, you’re probably overlooking the other options. If you’re dying to get off campus for a little while, take a few close friends home with you. Or, if you’re missing your friends from back home, invite them to your campus and show them how to enjoy a weekend Marquette Style.
