I’d Tap That: The Top 8 Collegiette Approved [FREE] iPhone Apps

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

So I don’t have the exact data to prove it (or really any data at all…), but based on personal observation, I have come to the conclusion that approximately 1 in 3 collegiettes suffer from ISA.

What is ISA, you ask?

IPhone. Separation. Anxiety.

I am one of them. Today is the day that I out myself, admitting to you all that I am plagued with extreme anxiety when my iBaby and I are further than five feet away from each other. But hey, I’m not the only one. If you’re not suffering from ISA now (remember: 1 in 3), trust me, you will be by the end of this article.

Collegiettes, I’m about to let you in on my pick for the top 8 FREE iPhone apps, the apps that fuel my addiction. I’m talking about silly, sexy, useful, intelligent and super- entertaining apps that you can’t help but be hooked on. Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

PHOTOGRAPHY: Because instagram is getting kind of annoying.

#1: Pic stich

Though it may sound similar to Instagram, it’s so much more. This photo app lets you make collages (choose from 70 possible layouts) of up to six photos at a time. Plus, you can edit the photo by adding Effects (like filters), Stickers, Drawings, Text and Memes. You can even whiten teeth and remove redeye and blemishes. The finished photo or photos can be imported to Facebook, Twitter, Email, your iPhone album or Instagram with one click – you can even your creation to Walgreens Photo Center!

#2: Postagram

Post cards aren’t just cheesy cards you get from your grandparents while they’re on a cruise in the Caribbean. With this super innovative app, you can turn your iPhone photos into mail-able postcards that include a personalized message. Type in your intended recipient’s address, and postagram will mail it right to him or her! It is a great way to keep in touch with friends while abroad, or a special way to let someone know they’re on your mind. Your first five are free, after that each postagram will cost you 99 cents a pop.

#3: Snapchat

I don’t think this one needs much explanation. Talk about addictive apps. If you’ve got it, add me as a friend (sorry in advance for all the kissy faces…). If you don’t, go download it. NOW.

LIFESTYLE: Because there’s a better way to track your period…and your calories.

#4: P Tracker Lite

I love this app because it takes away the uncertainty surrounding that time of month. By inputting your default cycle length, period length and daily symptoms (there’s a list of 17 that include things like bloating, cramps, cravings and headaches), it predicts your next period for you. It also shows you the dates when you’re ovulating (good to know if you’re being intimate). No more guessing!

#5: MyFitnessPal

This is more than “a calorie counter & diet tracker”; it is truly a way of life. First, you input your current weight and goal weight. Then the app generates a daily calorie limit that will help you reach that goal within five weeks. Using the app like a diary, you input what you eat during the day (you can even scan barcodes right into the app) – which adds to your food total. You also input your exercise – which subtracts from your food total. By keeping tabs on your cals, you’ll be a lot more conscious of what you eat. This app has truly changed my food intake and helped me stay fabulously fit!

FOOD: Because restaurant “reviews” are so unreliable.

#6: LocalSpin

This is my absolute favorite new app. If I had to describe it, I’d say it’s like twitter…but for food. Basically, you log in to the app using your Facebook info, which gives you access to a news feed of local restaurant recommendations (that are 140 characters or less). There, you can see recs from friends (so you have to make sure to tell them to download the app ASAP!) and other LocalSpin users within a certain radius. It’s a great way to read (or write) a quick opinion about a restaurant, especially when you’re starving/in a rush. The best part is that since it runs through Facebook (but doesn’t post annoying things on your wall, I PROMISE), you know the recs are coming from people you trust, not randos.

FUN: Because you need to kill time while waiting at Student Health.

#7: Akinator

This app is seriously insane. I sometimes spend hours trying to trick this thing. Akinator seems like a simple app: it asks you to think of a character (a person, celeb, animation or even an animal) and then asks you a series of questions in order to guess what you’re thinking of. So what’s the insane part? It’s almost NEVER wrong. Seriously. I dare you to try to beat it. It’s literally guessed the most obscure things: SpongeBob, my mom, Bruiser from Legally Blonde…

#8: PipeRoll

A wicked cool maze-like game that involves connecting sewage, gas and water pipes. If you like matching or “connect the dots” type games then you should totally check this out. Besides, it’s probably the closest you (or at least, I) will ever get to laying foundation for a house.

So there you have it, collegiettes. Make sure to hit the App store and get tapping: you can’t download these apps fast enough. Just don’t blame me when your ISA sets in!
