Guild Elections: Get to Know Who’s Running

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

So you want to know who to vote for this week or have you already seen too many leaflets to know who to vote for? HCX has you covered! We’ve profiled a few of the candidates for you already, so read on and see what you think…

Alex Phillips

Running For: VP Academic Affairs

Why should you vote for her? She wants to make academic affairs “more engaging and interactive for all students”.

Key Manifesto Points:

  • MACE Feedback in Week 6 so that the feedback affects YOUR course – not the year after you
  • An online system to see when rooms in academic buildings are free for private or group work A
  • All lectures to be recorded and text messages when lectures are cancelled or rescheduled.

This all seems pretty good to us… Now who’s next? Guild President!

Why should you vote for her? She wants you to “get the most for your £9,000” fees.

Key Manifesto Points:

  • Making sure the Guild is “engaging and accessible” so students can get what they want from their student experience
  • Maintaining the rent freeze and making sure landlords provide safe and affordable housing
  • Keeping prices in Guild outlets low to make sure living costs are kept low.

Kathryn Jarvis

Running For: Guild President

Why should you vote for her? “‘Every student should vote as it allows us to make a difference ‘Right Here. Right Now.’”

Key Manifesto Points:

  • Continue fighting the council against the proposed streetlight switch off
  • Low accommodation costs
  • Minimum standard for the amount of contact hours across all subjects;
  • Shuttle bus between St Lukes and Streatham.

So you want to know who’s running for AU President…

Alex Powell

Running For: AU President

Why should you vote for her? She’s been on AU Exec committee and Windsurf committee the last 2 years, and has absolutely loved it. She’s worked closely with this year’s AU President.

Key Manifesto Points:

  • Keeping the new sports park affordable
  • Developing the smaller AU clubs
  • Push BUCS rankings to 6th.vote

Now, let’s see about PAC…

[pagebreak]Abbe Cooper

Running For: PAC – Participation and Campuses

Why should you vote for her? She has spent 2 years on the Welcome Team and has already had 2 jobs within the Guild so she feels she “has the relevant experience for the role”

Key Manifesto Points:

  • Bringing cash in hand back for societies at the Activities Fair: students turn up and join up!
  • Work alongside NUS and Vinspired to boost a national volunteering scheme for students to be commended for the hours that they put in.
  • A weekly updated timeline of all activities and opportunities available for all students, a place to market events, a discussion board for all societies to improve communication and which has out of hours help!

No matter who you vote for this week, make sure you do vote! It’s your Guild and your University life, make sure you get what you want out of it. Also, be sure to check out VoteFest this week for more information.
