Unique and Fun Snacks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

Now that the spring semester is getting into full swing, it is the perfect time to stock up on some fun snacks. Gone are the days when college students had to snack on bland peanut butter crackers and drab pudding cups. It might take a bit of time, but during your next trip to the grocery store, break from your typical pattern and check out different sections. It is surprising to learn just how many unique foods exist that are not delicious and healthy, but best of all, convenient. Below are just a few of these snacks highlighted.

Seaweed Snacks

If you have eaten sushi, than you have most likely eaten seaweed. But, have you ever tried seaweed snacks? A variety of brands sell strips of roasted and seasoned seaweed that come in a variety of flavors. With only 30 calories per serving, these strips are also nutritious, being a great source of vitamin A and C.

Wasabi Peas

Everybody loves a snack that they can grab a fistful of to pop in their mouth. Rather than being tempted to reach into a bag of M&M’s, try grabbing a handful of wasabi peas. This snack is minimally processed, an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, and only 120 calories per 1/3 cup serving. Even better, you are eating peas, a vegetable!

Shelled Edamame

Often seen as an appetizer at Asian restaurants, shelled edamame are minimally processed with no added ingredients and a great source of vitamin C and fiber. They taste great plain, or you can add a dash of sea salt or other seasonings for added flavor. Try serving these soy beans on rice crackers for an Asian inspired treat.

Sweet Potato Chips

Chips are delicious and guilty pleasure for many people. However, not every chip out there is greasy and loaded with fat and artificial ingredients. Try buying an organic brand that is minimally processed and made with natural ingredients. Sweet potato chips are great because they have the added benefit of being high in vitamin A.

Mochi Ice Cream

This dessert is another food found in Asian restaurants. Mochi is the name of the sticky rice dough surrounding its ice cream filling to create a small, round ball. This treat comes in a variety of flavors from green tea to mango, red bean and chocolate. With only 100 calories per serving, this is a great light treat to satisfy your sweet tooth.
