Real Live Southern Guy Jeremy: 5 Tips to Pick up a Date in the Gym

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Southern Miss chapter.

Valentine’s Day is approaching. Soon, campus will be covered in pink and red acres of candy and cards. Couples will be on every corner.

If you’re alone this Valentine’s day, you’ll be wishing you had someone special to share it with. If you want to escape the feeling, you should print this article and tape it to your wall. With my advice and a little bravery, you’ll have your own significant other and your own smile for the Valentine’s Day.

I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about getting a date in one of the easiest pick-up spots on campus: The Payne Center’s Workout Zone (WOZ)

Guys go to the gym for two reasons: To perform and to impress you! While the guys who goes to the gym to perform tend to be bolder, they also have a tendency to get extremely busy with their sport.

Don’t worry, guys go to the gym to impress you, to get attention from you and to make you their girlfriend. Here are five tips to easily snag a guy to snuggle this Valentine’s Day.

1. Stare.

I don’t mean the creepy, “I want to eat you alive” look Ali Larter had in Obsessed. I mean a more gentle, “You’re really pumpin that iron, big guy” look. Guys love gratification, and we love it best in the gym, especially when we think we’re lifting heavy weight.

The minute you start showing us attention, we start adding pounds. Be sure to come over and say hello, before we hurt ourselves.

2. Play dumb.

Few feelings compare to the one guys get when a girl comes up and asks him to show her how to use a machine. Unless the guy is unavailable or blind, you’re pretty much guaranteed to make him smile. He’ll think you’ve been watching him long enough to think he knows what he’s doing.

Your need will give him a confidence boost, and he’ll feel like an expert. I know many of you probably aren’t strangers to the gym, but your target doesn’t need to know.

3. Sexy, not apalling.

You’re beautiful. However, you don’t have to rely on the physical too heavily. You can almost never go wrong with a pair of tights.

You can, on the other hand, go very wrong with shorts. If you have a nice, dark pair that fit you respectfully, then by all means show off those thighs.

If you have to “retrieve” your shorts several times during your workout, you know to never wear them again. Guys love a girl who’s not afraid to look sexy, but if you’re showing too much we’ll feel like we’re sharing you with every guy who sees you.

4. Have no shame.

In no way am I asking you to demean yourself, but there’s nothing wrong with being seductive. Once a guy thinks he has your attention, if he’s interested, you can bet he’ll start doing some extra sets so you can see his muscles. You should reciprocate.

Your response can be something as simple as doing your ham curls a little slower. You can also try doing the exercise incorrectly; a guy who’s interested will come over and help you.

5. Know your prey.

Yes, you’re going to have to do some spying. You don’t want to flirt with a guy who’s taken.  Is he in a group?

For guys, “groups = confidence.” If he’s working out alone, he’s more likely to have his guard up and feel self-conscious. Your move should be to approach him carefully and with a moderate smile.

Guys who work out alone almost always bring music with them. Just go up and signal him with a wave. If he’s rude enough not to pull out his buds or turn his music down, you don’t want him anyway.

Follow these tips the next time you’re in the gym. It may be too early in the relationship for gifts when Valentine’s day comes around, but at least you’ll have a date!
