The 10 Commandments for the Perfect Pout

If you are like me, you do not know where to start when wearing lipstick and can never seem to get it right. Lipsticks have changed over the years, from plain mattes to lip stains and from nudes to beat reds. You can no longer just take the tips your mother once taught you and instead have to evolve with the times. Here are ten fool proof rules and tips on how to reach your perfect pout for daytime or a night out.

.)  Start with a clean palette – Gently exfoliate the dry skin from your chapped winter lips by lightly rubbing with a damp washcloth or using a soft bristled toothbrush. This will create a smooth base.

.)  Know your lipsticks – Lipsticks come in many different colors and finishes so be sure to know which is appropriate for the occasion. Matte can be long-lasting and perfect for a casual daytime lip. Creamy formulas are hydrating and great for the winter but the sheen is more appropriate for a date or night out. Lastly, longwearing formulas can stain your lip for some time so be sure it’s a color you don’t mind rocking for a couple days!

.)  Not your mothers lip pencil – Lining your lips used to be a beauty faux pas due to horrendous ring left around your lips while the inside whipped off. With todays lipsticks however, the longer-lasting lipsticks have since fixed this beauty blunder. Lining your lips acts as a neutralizer so the color on your lips appears closer to the color in the tube.

.)  Brush it on – After applying the color to your lips, make it last by dispersing the pigments evenly with a brush specifically for the lips.

.)  Blot it right – The old technique your mother probably taught you was to take a piece of tissue, fold it in half, and press your lips together. This way of blotting actually causes uneven wear of the lipstick color. Instead, blot by pressing the tissue paper to your lips using your fingertips.

.)  Lipstick and teeth do not mix – Avoid the unforgettable embarrassment of having lipstick on your teeth by putting your index finger in your mouth and gently closing your lips around it. Pull your finger straight out to clear the inside of your lips of any lipstick residue.

.)  Highlight – Make your lips look more luscious and full by defining your cupid’s bow, the point on the top of your lips, and the bottom curve of your lower lip, with a light, creamy concealer or highlighting pencil.

.)  A glossy finish – Add even more plump to your pout by adding sheen from a clear gloss. This will also make your lips more kissable and soft – something everyone wants!

.)  In the nude – Although red and burgundy lip colors are very trendy right now, so is nude! Fair skinned ladies can benefit from this less intimidating color but choosing a hue with a hint of pink, one shade darker than your skin tone.  Nude is also a great starting place for lipstick novices wishing to try it out.

.)  One for everyone – There is a lipstick color for every skin type: Olive skin an orange-red color, Fair skin a blue-red hue, and dark skin a more burgundy red. Although these are the recommended colors based on skin type, don’t be afraid to mix and match! Lipstick trends change with seasons so try ‘em all!
