Opinion: The Ugly Truths of Dating Fraternity Guys

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Southern Miss chapter.

Being in a sorority, I always find myself going to date parties, swaps, philanthropy events and other social settings with fraternity boys. That being said, I can’t really help it if most of the guys I date end up being in fraternities.

I might as well add that I’ve always had a little thing for the frat boys. I mean what’s not to love with their cute little button up shirts, short shorts, and visors; and not to mention their gentlemanly nature and sweet, southern charm- most of them at least.

But once you actually start dating a fraternity guy, things can get a little complicated-especially when said fraternity guy is still going through his pledge ship. You have to be very patient and know that at any minute, he might have to drop whatever he is doing to go do something for his brothers.

Frat boys that haven’t been initiated yet are definitely the hardest ones to have a relationship with; so if you are the jealous and clingy type, I suggest you wait until after the guy you like is initiated to get in a relationship with each other. I say this because most guys going through pledge ship have to bring dates to all the football games and date parties, and if you happen to not be able to go, guess what?

He will most likely have to bring someone else. Also, he will not be able to spend a lot of time with you because he will have things to do for his fraternity every day. And if he is very committed to his fraternity and is serious about pledging, he will most likely put his fraternity first before you, so you will eventually have to learn to deal with it.

How long will you have to deal with this you may be wondering? Well, it depends. Some fraternities initiate their pledges a couple months after they get their bids; but some, unfortunately, wait a whole semester and a couple months in to the next semester before initiating their pledges. If that is the case, then expect to get into a couple of fights with your guy every once in a while because you will get fed up sometimes.

Just try to remember that most of the time; if your guy has to do stupid stuff for his fraternity, it is not really in his control. After all, you do want him to finally get initiated into his fraternity so you can know that all of that drama you both put up with counted for something right?

Now you should know that getting in a relationship with a guy that is pledging a fraternity is not a walk in the park. Therefore, if you do decide to move forward with the relationship, remind yourself when you get frustrated of your guy having to guard the homecoming float every night or go pick up drunk members of the fraternity, that you signed yourself up for this!

However, regardless of all the drama and negative stuff, dating a fraternity guy can be one of the most interesting and fun experiences ever, so I am definitely not discouraging it! I am just telling you that it can be exhausting and aggravating at times, but I promise it will be worth it if you both can make it through until initiation!
