This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.
Year: Senior
Major: Computer and Electrical Engineering
Hometown: Frankford, DE
Relationship Status: Taken
Her Campus VT: If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be and why?
Zach Rickards: I would describe myself by the word determined. My past from growing up was never
the greatest situation and can still be rocky at times today; however, I have always strived to complete
the goals I set before me.
HCVT: What are your future career goals?
ZR: In the near future I am striving to be employed in the Raleigh/ Durham, NC area, where I will start
as an entry level engineer. When I look ten to fifteen years from now, I would like to progress to the
management side of the business world or move into entrepreneurship..
HCVT: What are some of your hobbies?
ZR: Growing up I was a boy scout, which allowed me to acquire a lot of outdoor activities, such as
snowboarding, skiing, fishing, camping, canoeing, kayaking, and the list goes on. I am also a die-hard
sports fan and by being a computer engineer, I can admit to being hooked to a video game from time to
time.
HCVT: What are the top five most played songs on your iTunes?
ZR: Life Less Ordinary, Let Your Troubles Roll By, What About Everything?, which are all by
Carbon Leaf. Then there is Payphone by Maroon 5 and Springsteen by Eric Church. This is a new
computer and I recently transferred all my music in, so in few months this may be different.
HCVT: What are your words to live by?
ZR: If I had a saying or some words to live by, I would have to choose, “We decide and shape our own
future.” The beauty of life is that if there is something you want or a goal you want to achieve, you
have the opportunity to make that real. Of course, we all might run into some adversity, but never give
up and eventually things will come around.
HCVT: Celebrity Crush?
ZR: Jessica Alba
HCVT: Describe your ideal date in Blacksburg?
ZR: If I were to plan a date for my girlfriend when she was in town visiting, I think I would choose
to incorporate a little of every part of Blacksburg into the occasion. I would include one of our great
hiking trails after packing a backpack or basket for lunch to eat at the top. Once we arrived home from
the trip, I would take a stroll around the duck pond and maybe feed some ducks. Dinner would either
be Poor Billy’s or 610 Rosemont, and the night would be finished off with a movie or enjoying the
company of some friends at one of our local establishments.
HCVT: What do you look for in a girl?
ZR: My key quality that I look for in a girl is confidence. Personally I believe that being confident and
content with oneself is necessary for anyone before being that way with another person. Some other
qualities I look for are what type of personality she has, whether that personality is selfish, caring, etc.,
and I would be looking for the caring, but funny type. Definitely look for a girl I can have fun with and
be best friends with, along with the other parts of a relationship.
