The Weekend Dilemma: Flats versus Heels

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

The school week has finally ended. It’s Friday night and your girlfriends are crowding into your room with makeup, flat irons and numerous outfits to get your opinion on. There’s music blaring while you get ready and take pictures. The mood is light hearted and everyone is having a good time… until that moment when everything gets serious.

Let’s face it, we have all had the experience of standing in front of our closets, trying desperately to choose the right pair of shoes. As we have all learned since we were little girls, obsessed with Disney movies, the right pair of shoes can change your life. Cinderella made it happen with the glass slipper, right? Pick the right pair of shoes and you will find your true love. Alright, I’m not going to be that dramatic. Picking the right shoes to complete the outfit may not turn you into a princess, but it’s still a big deal. Not only can they make your butt look killer, but they also give you some serious confidence and set the mood for the entire night.

But life in the city means you’re either draining your bank account paying for cabs to and from parties or you’re putting on your big girl panties and walking. College nightlife is unpredictable; you may think you’re only walking to an apartment 10 minutes down the street when a fabulous party presents itself a full 30-minute walk away. If you’re like me, every time you hand the cab driver your fare and a tip, because you couldn’t bear to walk in your heels, you’re thinking about how that money should have been going into your shoe fund. Ironic, I know.

I hope you’ve all come to realize that Boston is an old, historic city and that can mean serious hills and even cobblestone streets. Neither of these is conducive for heels and after a night out, they can be a death trap. However, if you are a diehard heel girl, by all means, go for it. But that demands some serious commitment.

This means all night you will have to smile and refrain from complaining to everyone you encounter about how badly your feet hurt. And please for the love of god, do not be that girl walking home from a party barefoot. I don’t like walking around barefoot in my dorm room, let alone the streets of Boston. Ladies, this look is not attractive and it screams, “I am too drunk to care that I look ridiculous and am possibly contracting a disease.” Just remember, what seems like a reasonable pair of heels on Friday night leaves you with throbbing blisters all over your feet come Saturday morning.

For all of you out there in a committed relationship with your high heels, I have come up with a few solutions. Many retailers including Walgreens, Target and Amazon are now marketing flats that fold up and fit inside your purse. This will allow you to wear your favorite platform peep toe pumps while still keeping it classy at the end of the night. This is really your best bet, but if you insist that you will be able to suffer for the price of beauty, choose a moderate heel with a hidden platform. This will not guarantee you a blister-free experience but it will mitigate the damage just enough to be bearable.

As for myself, I’ll stick to my flats. I have found myself a few pairs with just enough sparkle to be special enough to wear out at night while saving myself, or rather my feet, the pain of walking home. I have woken up with too many blisters to want to wage another night-long battle with my high heels. You have won stilettos, you have broken me down.

Now, instead of bandaging up my battered feet, I will be spending some quality time scouring the internet for more perfect going out flats.
