Femme Friendly Halloween Costumes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Halloween is just around the corner, if you’re still undecided on what to dress-up as and are trying to stray from the trimmed hem, high heel and fishnet combo- then check out these awesome, feminist inspired costumes!

Rosie The Riveter

It is an iconic symbol of girl power, and all around just a cool look (denim and bandanas… hello comfy!) To pull this costume off, find some coveralls or a fitted flannel shirt, wrap your hair in a red bandana and show off your guns! You can do it!

Pussy Riot

The Russian performance artists- turned protest group would make for an awesome group costume. All you need is lots of neon clothing, a balaclava, maybe some instruments and a kick-ass attitude!

Tina Fey
Put on your bossypants and bust a move! Also, this song should be played everywhere you go in your costume: http://everyoneisgay.bandcamp.com/track/id-go-gay-for-tina-fey. What you need is a blazer or pantsuit and a pair of practical shoes. Add a pair of thick frames and this ensemble could also work for another femme favourite; Rachel Maddow!

Ryan Gosling

Hey girl, perhaps you’re a lady who is down with doing drag on Halloween and you could go as this heartthrob. All you would need to do to prepare is catch up on the latest memes and ask a friend to borrow an outfit.

A Girl Guide
It’s time to pull out your old badge-covered sash and crafty camp hat. Also, this costume gives you complete permission to start sing-alongs all night, but remember… you have to promise to share and be a friend!

Katniss Everdeen

Who doesn’t want to feel a little badass on Halloween? This pop culture phenomenon is sure to be a hit and pretty easy to pull off! What you need is a braid your long mane, find a bow and arrow and wear a pair of brown boots. Add in a Mockingjay pin and lots of neutral colours and you’re set!

Also, here are some other timeless suggestions: Daria Morgendorffer, Velma Dinkley, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Frieda Kahlo, Dolores Huerta, or Gloria Steinem.

There you have it, even though it seems like options are limited for feminist-minded gals looking to dress up for Halloween, but with some thought and creativity it isn’t hard to break away from the masses of pre-assembled, one-size-fits-all costumes. These ideas are just a few of the awesome ideas you could come up with to make your Halloween a little less busty, and with a few less blisters… Happy Halloween ladies!
