HC Leeds’ Halloween Costumes on a Student Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

That time of year has come around again: the pumpkins, the ghosts, the pirates, the inevitable debate about whether or not Halloween should be celebrated at all but, in general, students tend to take the approach that Halloween (although perhaps perceived by some as a little ridiculous) is just one of those hilarious opportunities to celebrate, and so they should!

However, as with all events, there is always going to be a slight punishment to the purse but Halloween shouldn’t have to give your bank account a fright. Here are the Top 10, cheap-o home made costumes.

1. A Bunch of Grapes

FIRSTLY, decide whether you’re green or purple grapes.

Then, you will need:

– A green or purple top
– Green or purple bottoms (such as a skirt or leggings)
– Green or purple balloons
– A stapler (or lots and lots of safety pins)

A bunch of grapes is always a great one to choose, it’s incredibly simple yet looks wicked and will get a good laugh. Do bear in mind though that it can’t necessarily be trusted to make it through the entire night. Simply pin the balloons all over yourself, and if you want to go the whole hog, perhaps paint your face the same colour. Alternatively you can just use eye make up of the same colour to finish it off.

2. The Ghost

THE SIMPLEST COSTUME SINCE HALLOWEEN BEGAN. Two words – white sheet. Just cut two eyeholes and slip it on like a poncho. Make sure that it’s not too long though, ghosts are known to fly, but flying down a flight of stairs having tripped on your costume wouldn’t be the best way to celebrate Halloween.

3. Mummy

Again, not one to be trusted to make it through the night but can make a fabulous entrance. Just wrap yourself up in toilet paper (The International Supermarket on Brudenell Grove sells 36 rolls for £5!) and secure it down with some cellotape.

4. Mime

In my opinion, mime’s and general circus people can be really, really creepy so how about trying this one? All you need is a pair of dark trousers, a stripey top, some mildly creative face paint and you’re there! To take it one step further though, why not invest in some braces and a beret? They’re both sure to be usable again when the next dress up occasion comes along.

5. Cereal Killer

If you’re someone who likes to get an ironic giggle, this is the costume for you – and can also be your supply of breakfast for the next 2 weeks! You’ll need to purchase one of those variety packs of cereal, some plastic knives and some safety pins -all of which can be purchased for less than a fiver! Then just stick some of the knives into the empty packets, dribble some red nail varnish down from the holes and pin them all over yourself.

And a few for those wishing to show some bod…

6. Bunny

The Bunny will appeal to anyone who’s looking for the standard American version of Halloween (as though Halloween isn’t totally American?!) This is one for the cheekies, and will be sure to get you looked at. All you need is a leotard, a pom-pom, some bunny ears and a bow tie. Ears can be made by attaching some grey or pink coloured cardboard triangles to an Alice band and a bow tie can be made from an old piece of fabric. Pin your pom-pom to your lower back, tie your bow, draw a few whiskers, ears on and off you go!

7. Turtle

Again – this is one for the girls who want to be seen. Preferably go for a green leotard (but failing that any colour will do) and find a largish piece of cardboard (from an old cereal box perhaps?). Cut the card into an oval shape, draw some crissy-crossy, turtle-y lines and fasten it to your back.

And a few for those who want to use that large box that’s been sitting in the corner of the wardrobe…

8. Rubik’s Cube

Just paint squares of different colours onto the box, make a head-hole, in you get and out you go to play!

9. Pokemon Card

Again; a box, painted correctly, head-hole cut – you know what to do.

10. Robot

Box, tin foil, some paint, taxi. (Take care whilst in the taxi!)

So there you go! Just a few little ideas to make your Halloween costume fabulous without having to carve into your student loan like it’s a Jack-O-Lantern.

Happy Halloween!
