Tonight I came running up the stairs to my room on the 7th floor, after running about three miles around campus, to find most of my floor mates socializing in the hall around one of my friends’ rooms. I was excited to see them all chatting, because it’s usually just me and my roommate that consistently keep our door open. My happiness quickly diminished when one of the football players stepped out of their room. Now, my floor consists mostly of boys and football players, but it was this specific football player that I had thought was cute since…move-in day.
I instantly became hyper-aware of my sweat, red face, and messed up hair. I was a disaster and definitely not how you would want to look the first time you had a legitimate conversation with a cute boy. This realization didn’t help the red face situation at all, so I quickly excused myself to my room and shut the door. In attempts to not look like a total loser, I washed my face, brushed my hair, and cooled down some, then got a drink and went to go make some small talk after about 10 minutes. But the fact of the matter is that talking to boys sucks…especially when they’re cute.
I always have this thought that I’m super awkward talking to guys and I’m constantly the one that’s nervous and struggling to find something to say to that cute guy in my class. I’m pretty sure all girls feel the same way and the truth is, boys feel like that too. While trying to think of a topic for this article, I actually went and talked to my two neighbors, Kendrick and Ethan. I forget how the conversation started, but Kendrick sighed and just said, “talking to girls sucks”.
Its weird to hear a guy saying this but honestly, it’s hard to instantly relate to someone of the opposite sex, especially when you just met them. You can’t just be like “oh my gosh! Your shoes are so cute! Where’d you get them?” and eventually have a 15-minute conversation about where you shop. What you can do is still choose a compliment as an icebreaker. Boys love a little ego-boost, we all know that. So why not compliment his shoes too? That could transfer into a conversation about what sports he plays, or what his favorite color is.
Statistically, you’re bound to find something you both like that will lead to a full conversation. It’s already difficult talking to guys, so choose something that you both feel comfortable talking about, or things he likes. Just because he’s a boy doesn’t mean you can’t like the same things! So take a deep breath, take a risk, and start the conversation with the cutie across the classroom or on your floor. Besides, noticing those little things that he likes, may end up being a big reason why you stand apart from other girls.Â
