How to Recuperate over Fall Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

If you stay at school…
– Clean your room and do your laundry… As college students, we are always so busy trying to find time for schoolwork, exercise, and that hour or so to lie down and watch some Netflix. This being said, it is ridiculously easy to let your room become a pigsty or to let your laundry build up in a pile so high that it starts to resemble Mt. Everest. Take this long weekend to do some cleaning and chores to cleanse yourself of the messy lifestyle you often find yourself living. You’ll feel better when you can see your floor… I promise.

– Get off campus…
Getting off campus during the week or weekend helps us to remember that while school may be a huge part of our life, the universe does not revolve around exams, essays, and problem sets. Whether you leave campus to grab dinner, or you spend a day shopping at The Galleria, getting out into the real world can put things in perspective, relieve stress, and help you to get to a calm place before the work starts back up again.
– Try to rest… I don’t know about you but I can’t remember the last time I got 8 hours… Although not having quite as much work may be a tempting opportunity to party as hard as physically possible, having more free time is also a great chance to catch up on some sleep.

If you go home…
– Eat at your favorite restaurants… Although this Fall Break is depressingly short, there are enough days to run to as many of your favorite spots as possible. We all crave certain things from home that we can’t get at school, and satisfying those cravings can be nearly therapeutic (yeah I compared eating to therapy).
– Enjoy home cooking… While I’m on the topic of food… If you’re lucky enough to have parents that cook some delish cuisine, take advantage of this opportunity to bask in the comfort of homemade food.
– Spend time with family… This one is obvious. Although some of us may live closer to Wash U than others, or even in St. Louis itself, many students rarely get to see their parents let alone their families. Quality time with family is priceless, and this long weekend is a great time to rack up those hours of family bonding. It’s a short break so you probably won’t get too sick of them.

In general…
– Treat yourself! We all work hard enough to be well deserving of this break, so we should all treat ourselves in one way or another. Whether it’s a day of golfing, a meal you can’t afford, or a relaxing mani/pedi, you should give yourself a little treat.
