Auburn University Takes on Hunger

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

Auburn is known for its diehard family spirit, and as members of the Auburn Family we try to take care of the world at large. Hunger is a problem that affects a large number of the Auburn-Opelika community. There are several different organizations on campus whose aim it is to lower the rate of Hungry children in our area, such as Beat Bama Food Drive and “Why Care?”. In honor of World Food Day on October 16th, these organizations will be sponsoring Hunger Week.

Beat Bama Food Drive has been taking on Hunger in Auburn for several years now, but things are a little different this year. The goal this year is to earn 315,000 pounds before November 19th, the Monday before the Iron Bowl. As always, there is the option to submit cans to various drop-off centers around campus. One major difference this year is that students have the option to donate money through their Tiger Card by telling cashiers to add money to their total. Beat Bama Food Drive coordinators are asking students to donate $6.18 each, for that would give them enough money to reach the goal. This year isn’t about just showing up Alabama, it’s about helping those in need. For more information regarding involvement with Beat Bama, contact director Mark Price at mhp0005@auburn.edu.

The Why Care? Campaign is a newer focus within The Committee of 19, a hunger organization on Auburn’s campus. The goal of the campaign is to get students thinking about the effects of hunger and the ways to end it. To do this, coordinators Devin Walker and Aubrey Sullivan have students write the reasons they care about hunger on whiteboards, and then take pictures to post on the website and social media sites. The coordinators of “Why Care?” will be on the concourse every Friday from 10 am to 2 pm, so students can stop by and learn more about the campaign. The goal is to have 10,000 pictures on the website by Tuesday, but of course caring about hunger has no deadline.
