Wellness Wednesdays: Boost Up Your Metabolism

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

Having trouble staying in that health kick with midterms approaching? Having even more trouble picking the right food to eat at Seasons or LaCava? Here are some of the best foods to eat to give your metabolism a boost and where you can find them at Bentley!

Spice, Spice, Spice!

Peppers are one of the BEST ways to give your metabolism a kick! Jalapeños, Habanero, Cayenne and other hot peppers are a great way to help speed up your metabolism and help reduce cravings. Your metabolic rate and blood circulation are increased when you eat spicy foods due to the capsaicin. It is said to help give your metabolism a 25 percent boost! A great place to find spicy foods at Bentley is to take the long trip down to Currito. The various spices, especially the Cajun spices, offered for the burritos are all great choices to give you that extra metabolic boost!

Green Tea

Green tea extract is a great way to increase your metabolism while still offering a ton of alternate health benefits. Green tea, as well as other caffeinated beverages is a great way to boost your energy and metabolism. Next time you’re in the library and feel that drowsiness coming, head down to Einstein’s or over to La Cava and grab a green tea for a quick energy boost! At the same time you’ll be giving your metabolism a jump start too!

Fruit

It may not be your ‘go-to’ food to grab when there’s an abundance of sweets on the dessert table, but if you opt for an apple or pear or any other fruit, you’re helping your body with weight sustainability, especially with such a low caloric count! By choosing an apple when you need a quick bite in between classes you’re also helping yourself feel full longer so the person sleeping next to you in your GB310 class doesn’t wake up from your stomach growling. Almost every dining spot on campus offers fresh fruit you can grab on the go!

Greens

Vegetables deep green in color are some of the MOST nutritious foods you could ever choose. Green veggies have some of the most diverse health benefits. In addition to boosting your metabolism, vegetables like spinach and broccoli help fight against numerous diseases, including heart disease, contribute to improving mental health including learning capacity, as well as giving your body the potassium and iron that are difficult to find in other foods. The rich calcium content in broccoli contributes to increasing your metabolism by acting as a trigger. While deciding which goodies to throw in your omelet that Miguel will so nicely prepare for you, think about tossing in a few broccoli heads in the mix!

H2O

Not much of a surprise here saying that water is essential to boosting your metabolism and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is recommended to drink at LEAST 8 glasses of water a day to help your body with the energy burning process. In not so many boring scientific terms, the overall concept of how important water is in boosting your metabolism is boiled down to the fact that by drinking a lot of water your body can exert more and more energy to your muscles to help burn those calories!

With these couple of tips in the back of your mind, maybe next time you’re at lovely ol’ Seasons you’ll reach for that apple instead of the brownie (but not every time, it’s always good to treat yourself too!)
