Pop Culture Blog: Amanda Bynes – From “All That” To Rock Bottom

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Former Nickelodeon star and actress Amanda Bynes has recently jumped on the drunken, downward spiral train. Apparently, one Lindsey Lohan isn’t enough. Bynes has been racking up the police reports recently, first being arrested on suspicions of drunk driving after she hit a sheriff’s patrol car and then twice after that for leaving the scene of two accidents without providing proper information. Bynes has entered a not guilty plea for the hit-and-runs and has turned to Twitter more than once to say, “it’s all false,” and that she doesn’t drink and drive.

Lindsey Lohan, who people cannot help but compare Bynes to at this point, has also taken to Twitter in outrage.

“Why did I get put in jail and a Nickelodeon star has had NO punishment so far?” Lohan tweeted.

If Bynes keeps behaving in true Lohan fashion, it won’t be long before she’s sent to jail, too. How did this Nickelodeon girl who managed to stay wholesome for so long suddenly start crashing and burning? I guess Hollywood eventually gets the best of everyone. Let’s focus on the positive and remember the Amanda that had her own television show, not her own jail cell.

1) Bynes used to be “All That” when she starred on the show in 1997 with other favorites like Drake Bell and Keenan Thomas.

2) Who didn’t love “The Amanda Show”? Bring out the dancing lobsters! Too bad Bynes won’t be getting spaghetti on her head, like actors on the show did, as her punishment for drunk driving.

3) “What I Like About You” re-runs still play on ABC Family in the afternoon and showcase that sweet, funny Amanda who proved she was more than just a child actress.

4) “She’s the Man” was a great movie for more reasons than Channing Tatum. Bynes pretending to be a boy had everyone laughing throughout the whole film, and she had everyone jealous of all her lip-locking scenes.

5) Can’t forget Bynes in the remake of “Hairspray,” with Zac Efron and Nikki Blonsky, when the world learned Bynes could actually sing.

6) “Easy A” was a great movie too, especially since Bynes was actually playing a different role this time. She showed her mean girl side alongside Emma Stone and Aly Michalka as a stuck up Christian girl with a not-so-Christian-after-all boyfriend.

It’s a shame that after all her success Bynes is currently headed down a scary, but all too common, path. Since I was little she has been cracking me up on television and in movies, but now she’s just cracking. I certainly hope there is a turn-around for Bynes that is much greater and faster than that of Lohan’s. Until recently, Bynes has never disappointed, and I would love to see her get her life back on track and jump back into the movies. Unfortunately, even if she does get off the crazy train, it is rumored that she is retiring from acting to move to the New York to become a fashion designer. Whatever Bynes new career ends up being, I just hope she pursues it sober and with jokes.
