College Fashion Week: Boston Recap!

Upon entering The Estate, I was incredibly excited to be at this Her Campus event.   After plugging it for weeks and discussing it at Her Campus meetings, College Fashion Week was actually happening.

The Estate was a very elegant club with a combination of jewel tones and warm woods being used through out the room.   The club consisted of two floors with the top floor being more of a balcony allowing the floor below to be exposed.   This was perfect allowing more people to view the fashion show than normally possible.   The Estate had ample seating and fairly secluded places allowing people to have a private conversation among friends.   In addition to the decoration that was part of the Estate, Her Campus also decorated throughout the place with their classic pink and black.   Pillows and signs were through out the club promoting Her Campus, but also to remind us to “Upgrade Your Life”, which was the theme of the fashion show.

The fashion show was divided into 4 parts, each with a different focus.   The segments were School, Gym, Weekend, and Formal.  Overall, the fashion was excellent.

For the School segment, the clothes were cool, yet comfortable.   They were versatile pieces that involved the mixing of textures, patterned bags, and an emphasis on girls’ being able to choose their own style.

For the Gym segment, black was the main color, but no matter the outfit, there was always a pop of color.  In some cases, it was the shirt or the stripe alongside the outside seam of the pant.   However, the most popular form of expression was shoes, which ranged from fluorescent sneakers to black sneakers with fluorescent laces.

The Weekend wear was similar to the School wear, except that it also included party clothes.   Gradually going from casual day clothes to party clothes, jeans paired with fun shirts and dresses with bold cuts and pops of color were the main features.

The Formal section included dresses that were bold expressions of color.  There was everything from an emerald green, sweetheart-cut, strapless dress to a sparkly pink/red glittery, long-sleeved dress.   The dresses were a variety of styles and shapes.  They also varied in the occasion in which one would need or be able to wear it.

Overall, the clothes were versatile and interchangeable with many of the other pieces.   Essentially, they were transition clothes, ones that fit into a number of outfits without losing their cuteness.  For example, tan heels were used in all of the segments, with the exception of the gym attire.   Tan heels can dress up a casual outfit, and they go with everything.   As a result, it was nice to see college fashion, but have it expressed in a way that made it accessible to the average college girl.

I also appreciated the fact that the models were normal, college girls of all different sizes. Representing BC were Caitlin Mann, Nuria Boj, Claire Aviles, Katelyn DeSimone, Alessandra Christiani, Alexandra Paz, Debi Lipman, Tina Lin, Alex Obusek, and Elise Melconian.  It was cool to see BC represented and to have college girls modeling college girl clothes.   By doing this, I felt that I could wear some of these fashions and not be fearful that I was trying to wear something that would not work with my body type.   It was quite nice.

In between the segments of the fashion show, there were performances by The Dear Abbeys from Boston University and NURiZE from Northeastern.   The Dear Abbeys performed “S&M” by Rhianna, “At Last”, and “You are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne.   NURiZE danced blending hip-hop and modern dance effortlessly into an entertaining and creative performance.   The two groups were wonderful additions to the evening.

Chipotle donated chips, salsa, and guacamole, and Pinkberry donated the fixings to make frozen yogurt sundaes.  It was the perfect combination of sweet and salty!   Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks could be bought from the Estate.

HerCampus also provided awesome goodie bags for everyone in attendance.   All of the college essentials were in fun canvas tote bags that said “Surviving College in Style”.   They are not only cute, but also really useful to carry all sorts of things.   In the bags, there were boxes of Stevia in the Raw, Luna Bars, Scünci hair accessories (including the Linziclip, bobby pins, and colorful hair elastics), Unreal Candy bars (aka. healthy candy, Yay!), Svelte protein shakes, a classy plastic HerCampus cup, a discount card of $100 from NuMe, and a gift card from Chipotle good for a FREE burrito, burrito bowl, salad, or taco.   Kotex also provided cool boxes that looked like magazines, but were actually containers of tampons.  Instead of having them loose (or any item that you want hidden) in your backpack, you could have in the box concealing them.   All of the items provided by HerCampus and Kotex were greatly appreciated.

College Fashion Week in Boston was fantastic, and as it drew to a close, I was sad to leave.   It had been a great night full of music, fun, and, of course, fashion.  Thank you to the founders of Her Campus, the entire Her Campus staff, the models, the performers, the wonderful people behind the scenes of the fashion show, and all of the generous sponsors. I hope that for the girls of Boston, there is one next year! (Or maybe even in the Spring? Or is that asking too much… ;) )
