Meet Kelly Jackmore, President of Lambda Pi Eta at ASU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Name: Kelly Jackmore
Hometown: Lumberton, NC
Year: Senior
Major: Communication (Advertising)

Q: So, tell me about Lambda Pi Eta.
A: Lambda Pi Eta is the official honor society of the National Communication Association. Lambda is the Greek word for Logos, meaning logic. Pi is Greek for pathos, meaning emotion. Eta is Greek for ethos, meaning ethics. These are the three components of Aristotle’s ingredients for persuasion.

Q: How long have you been a part of this organization?
A: One of my goals as a college freshman was to be a member of Lambda Pi Eta. This became a motivator for keeping my grades up. I was inducted last year, as a junior.

Q: What is the goal of LPH?
A: There are six goals of Lambda Pi Eta:

  1. Recognize, foster, and reward outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies
  2. Stimulate interest in the field of communication
  3. Promote and encourage professional development among communication majors
  4. Provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communication
  5. Establish and maintain closer relationships between faculty and students
  6. Explore options for graduate education in communication studies

(These goals can be found on the LPH website.)

Q: What type of people join LPH?
A: People who are passionate and effective communicators and are interested in preparing for their future endeavors.

Q: Did you always want to have a leadership role?
A: I have always enjoyed being in leadership positions. This is my first opportunity in college to show off those skills.

Q: What makes LPH unique compared to other campus organizations?
A: We are unique because there are quite a few requirements that have to be met before you can become a member. Students must have at least 60 credit hours, have a GPA of at least a 3.0 in all courses taken, complete at least 12 credit hours in the communication discipline, have a minimum GPA of 3.25 in communication courses, and rank within the top 35% of communication students. We are also unique because we are a very young organization. This will be LPH’s third year at Appalachian.

Q: What are some of the events that LPH hosts?
A: This year we are trying to bring in different workshops for our members. These will focus on preparing students for their career searches and/or grad school applications. We also have a community service project in the works.

Q: How many people are in LPH?
A: We have around 80 members right now. Some of these members will be inducted at our December ceremony.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being a part of this organization?
A: I enjoy getting to know other communication majors who are interested in advancing their educational experience. I also enjoy being able to participate in an organization that is focused on my interests.

Q: If you could sum up LPH in one sentence, what would it be?
A: LPH is an honor’s society that promotes effective communication in all fields of communication such as Communication Studies, Advertising, Public Relations, Broadcasting/Electronic Media, and Journalism.

Q: What could someone do if they were interested in joining?
A: When students become eligible they will receive an email giving them more information about LPH and how they can join.
