Breathe Deep, Stress Less

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

Let’s face it! As a college student, and attive member of an academic community we must admit that there’s just not enough hours in the day to get everything done. College life can get so overwhelming, with all the responsibilities and the balancing of our studies, jobs, and social life. We might even become subject to sleep deprevation. So what do you do when your super stressed out and don’t have enough time for relaxation?

Just breathe!
I know this sounds crazy because you’re always breathing but the way you breathe can affect your entire body. Breathing is simple and can be done even while you’re doing your work. If you practice good breathing exercises it could help you relax and relieve stress. (Quicker than you think) This might even help you consider picking up yoga. Which Rowan Rec Center has available for you on a weekly basi
s.

Here’s how to do it!
The key is to sit comfortably. You should place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. This is called belly breathing. You want to take a deep breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth with lips pursed. Make sure that when you’re breathing you’re inhaling using your diaphragm not your chest. This will make your belly push your hand out when you’re inhaling and in when you’re exhaling. Your other hand on your chest should remain still. Do this about 3 to 10 times or until you feel relaxed.

Breathing is essential in our lives. Not only can it help you relax but it can help you clear your mind of all stressful things. According to a Zen master Thich Nhat Han, “Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts. life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts. take hold of your mind again.”

Hope this helps you relax!
