Women in the World at Georgetown University
Women in the World is a foundation dedicated to advancing women and girls using The Daily Beast and Newsweek as a platform to share inspiring stories and solutions. Over the course of a few short years, Women in the World has cultivated a massive fan base, gaining major recognition and praise.
In its mission to develop and expand, Women in the World has begun to tap into one of its critical markets—college campuses. Georgetown University will soon be lucky enough to witness the introduction of Women in the World on Campus.
Women in the World on Campus will bring together college women and provide them with mentoring, leadership, and a chance to network and connect with potential employers. The hope of the initiative is to not only connect women on campus, but also across campuses and to the greater community of inspiring Women in the World. To do this, Women in the World will bring women leaders to campus. This speaker series has already successfully launched at Barnard College, Harvard University, and Rutgers University. Students heard from the humanitarian and educator, Kakenya Ntaiya, who is also the founder of Kakenya’s Dream and The Kakenya Center for Excellence. The Kakenya Center for Excellence is the first primary girls’ boarding school in the Transmara district of Kenya. Dr. Ntaiya’s ultimate goal is to give other Maasai girls access to education, self-realization, and leadership.
Callie McBreen, a senior in Georgetown College, had the opportunity to intern with Women in the World this past summer and is in the process of bringing the organization to campus. She believes that the Women in the World will have a major impact at Georgetown because of the large number of women leaders on campus, including the President and Vice President of GUSA.
The Women in the World Foundation was born out of a from a single event—the Daily Beast Summit—and it has since grown, gaining supporters such as Meryl Streep, Hilary Clinton, Diane von Furstenberg and dozens of other women leaders. Women in the World at Georgetown will give students the change to spark conversation about the challenges facing women and girls—from sex trafficking and rape in the military, to the need for more women in the boardroom.
