Landing your first major job interview is every collegiates dream. Being prepared for your first “big girl” interview includes everything from understanding the in’s and out’s of the company to wearing the perfect power suit. A detail that may seem minor, but should not be ignored, is the makeup worn to this oh so important first step to your career. It is important to convey a sense of professionalism while also being put together and modern. You want your interviewer to see your potential and a fresh face can be the cherry on top to a perfect interview.
Warning: your first interview is not the time for a smoky eye (unless of course you are applying at Sephora!) Too much make-up is a distraction in the workplace, so a potential employer will be put off by a heavy handed look. The makeup worn to an interview should subtly complement your features, so leave the magenta lips and blue eyeshadow at home.
A good starting point for interview make-up is an even complexion. Since we don’t all have perfect skin, using a medium-coverage foundation will hide imperfections without masking your face. I recommend the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Make-Up because it has buildable coverage, comes in a wide variety of shades and allows skin to breath.
Eye makeup should define the eyes without seeming harsh. Using matte colors, apply a vanilla color all of the lid and a medium brown eyeshadow though the crease. This will give the eyes more depth while still seeming natural. The perfect color for the crease is Urban Decay’s eyeshadow in Buck. I recommend using a dark brown eyeliner pencil for the upper lash line because it defines the eyes without being as dramatic as a black. Finish the eyes with a defining mascara on the upper and lower lashes.
Keep with the natural look for the rest of the face by using a pinky nude blush. Tarte’s Amazonian clay 12-hour blushes are long lasting, and their shade in Exposed is the perfect, subtle cheek color. Use a highlighter along the cheekbones and in the inner corners of the eyes to brighten the face. I love ELF’s Studio Bronzer in Golden, because despite being called a bronzer, this powder gives the perfect candlelit glow. Finish the entire look with a my-lips-but-better lipstick color. This shade varies depending on your skin tone.
Remember that your first big interview is your chance to shine. A killer resume will get you through the door for the interview, but a professional look will set you apart from the other applicants. Good luck!
