Five Television Shows That Won’t Be Back This Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

As college students, we get to call most, if not all, of the shots when it comes to our daily routines. We can choose to stay up all night, or go to bed. We can choose to skip class, to go to that concert, or that baseball game. For the first time in many of our lives, we can veg out on the couch watching television without our parents bickering endless demands to “do your homework”, or “help your sister with the dishes.” No more, the freedom to veg out is ours.

This year I made a new years resolution to not watch as much television – more specifically I told myself no new shows, just watch the ones you already watch and that will be fine. My friendly DVR makes it easy to fast forward and save time, but I broke the resolution just as easily as I made it. Since the New Year began I can count on almost all ten fingers the new shows I have started watching. But HEY, I deserve it. I’m a hard working college student. Right? Right. Each week my DVR paints a colorful picture of the various networks competing for my attention.

Here’s a list of shows that WON’T be making it back next season:

1) Pan Am – ABC
As glamorous as Leonardo Dicaprio made the stewardess’ look in Catch Me If You Can, that’s about all they were, glamorous. The not so entertaining and hard to hook series lasted 14 episodes.

2) Awake – NBC
Apparently this series couldn’t keep viewers awake long enough to keep them hooked. After a highly anticipated season premiere and high numbers, the show never managed to keep its audience. The story and plot itself was blurry and confusing, part of what made it interesting and part of what made watching it tedious. Some critics believe that awake was too complex for network television. It required too much patience from the viewer, but I guess we’ll never know!

3) Are you there, Chelsea?
However funny Chelsea Handler is on her television show, or in her autobiography, Are You There Vodka? It’s me Chelsea the show based on her lie proved to be less of a comedic gold mine. The show ends after a season of 12 episodes.

4) Alcatraz – FOX
I was personally sad to hear about Alcatraz getting canceled. I thought the storyline was something new and something interesting. I liked that it was based on the prison and even if the stories themselves weren’t real, the mystery of who was getting the keys and controlling the inmates was intriguing. But, I guess my own excitement about the show weren’t enough to keep it going for a second season. The 10.5 million season premiere viewers couldn’t keep the show on the top. Looks like Alcatraz is best left just as a tourist attraction.

5) The Firm – NBC
NBC closed up shop with the new legal drama The Firm. The Firm which is based off of a book The Firm, by Josh Grisham. The series was pulled from the Thursday night slot early on in the series and put on a Saturday night, but even the Saturday night slot didn’t help the series. With a slow, backward progression to tell the story, viewers got little new information per episode. This is one show I will be sad to see lost.
