Hello, hello! It’s that time again. Wait, timeout. I forgot my camera. Oh never mind. I found it! Let’s do this!
The “B cubed” (I just made that up, but I like it) destination of this week is Redding. Nestled beneath the towering Mount Shasta, Redding is the perfect combination of city and nature. A little fun fact about Redding: It is located equidistant exactly between Canada and Mexico. Random…I know. Moving on. Redding was founded in 1887 with a total of 600 people but expanded to over 3,000 in 1910’s mineral industry. The population doubled in the middle of the century with the completion of Shasta Dam. Redding’s weather is comparable to Davis but being situated at just under 500 feet, in extremely rare cases, snow has appeared in the city. Visit anytime of the year as you will find recreational activities for all seasons in abundance.
What not to miss:
Sundial Bridge: During the summer solstice, this bridge acts as a perfect sundial. But you don’t have to come on t particular day to enjoy the beauty. Stand on frosted stones and stare out at the emerald mountains. Wave at the boaters below or take your dog for a walk.
Turtle Bay Bird Sanctuary: Walk along a scenic route along the trail and take in the various wildlife. You might just be able to see the eagle’s nest situated along the highway.
Whiskeytown Reservoir: Boat, camp, swim and water ski as you let nature take you on a journey of tranquilly. Minutes from the lake is the tiny mining city of Whiskeytown where the population is a whopping 83. If you’re feeling adventurous head a little to the west for hiking and hidden waterfalls.
Monolith: See the remnants of the Shasta dam as you take a tour through this little piece of history. Touch the bronze scale model of the former mill building mounted upon the original concrete pier.
Schreder Planetarium Digital Theater: Check out stars, planets, and your place in the universe. Embrace your inner nerd (because it’s cool) and spend a day feeling small. I mean, compared to the sun, we are microscopic.
Mount Shasta: Do I really need to say anything about this place? Ski in the winter and rock climb in the summer. Wake up early at the top and see the sunrise.
White Water Rafting: Located on the upper part of the Sacramento River, this section is idle because it is not controlled by the Dam release. Spring and early summer are the best times to experience the unexperienced.
Redding will satisfy your inner adventure seeker, even if you don’t like the outside world. If you need inspiration, this place is bleeding it out in barrels. Whether you find it walking along the river, watching baby eagles, or floating on a boat, Redding’s sheer beauty will take your breath away.
